There's a very good men's barber shop on Ton That Tiep, at the temple end. It's called "For Men" or something similar.
It's an actual barbershop, not one of those places with a dozen mini-skirted women waiting to *ahem* "cut your hair". |

Thank you very much.
I had a friend who was in Korea and wanted a haircut. He held his fingers a half inch apart to signify that he wanted that much trimmed off. Instead he got his hair cut a half inch from his head.

Why does he have to speak English ? A haircut is a haircut. |

Got tired of the misunderstandings re haircuts years ago- Asking for a number 2 with square cut back ended up with the number 2 shaved into my skull and a swastika cut into the back of my head (sort of thing). Bought a clipper set (Chinese) for about $7.00- Electric and all. My good wife "mows" my head with a number 2 about once every 6 weeks.
I've had by now about 70 haircuts with this device, and I get just what I want, so by now I've saved a heap and look just as good as my face allows me to look I guess.
At least my tonsorial splendor is intact and costs almost nothing. Shame about the face, but I don't have to look at that. |

I went there and they want $19 (U.S.) for a haircut, which for some reason must include a leg massage and shampoo. (I don't even pay $19 in the U.S.) So, I said that I didn't want all that and left. Maybe next time someone asks for a haircut, they will be able to pay for only a haircut.

Perhaps you should have said "I just want a haircut", stayed for your shampoo and haircut, and paid $10. As I did. |

If you pay more than 30K for a haircut, find a new place imo.
Some places in the Bui Vien area that should be quite amenable to English instruction. And there are proper barber shops on that street. I wouldn't go into a "salon" either.
Personally, I get mine done for 10K at a local place, but it's a simple buzzer affair. |

I get a haircut, facial/facial massage (don't knock it until you've tried it, guys), light upper-body massage, and (optionally, occasionally) an ear cleaning for about $3. Go to the little out-of-the-way shops away from Bui Vien (mine is in Phu Nhan). The only thing is that I too get a buzz cut. It might be a lot more difficult to do if I had to explain some perfect haircut using hand signals. |

So I paid 40 K for a non-buzz hair cut on Bui Vien St.
I am happy with it.
Before I knew it, the guy started using an old fashioned straight edge razor at the end. They stopped using them in the US because of fears that AIDS can be spread by sharing razors. Next time I'll say no razor. |

The place I go to uses a quarter piece of a Gillette square blade for finishing touches. Made me a little nervous at first but its new and he does a great job. I pay 30k but its 30 min. outside the city. |

Know how many documented cases of AIDS there have been from sharing razors? 0.
Anyway, whatever you do, make sure you get the ear job. It is a bit intimidating at first, him sticking that surgical-like instrument into your ear canal, but he'll pull stuff out of there from decades ago. |

30 K for a haircut? I raised Cain when my barber raised his price from 10,000 t0 15,000. Then I stopped and factored in the going rate of exchange and said, "Ok." |

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control:
Quote: |
In a few cases, a person sharing a house with a person with HIV infection or taking care of a person with AIDS has become infected themselves. These infections may have been caused by sharing a razor, getting blood from the infected person into open cuts or sores, or some other way of having contact with blood from the infected person. |

Yes, the chance of getting AIDS from a razor may be small, but it is not worth taking the chance. My barber back home stopped using the straight razor when he learned of this problem. He didn't want to worry about the liability.
It also possible to get hepatitis C that way too, so all the more reason to say "no razor" next time. |
