|
|
I just have two questions...
1- Has anyone used Reach to Teach to teach in Taiwan? What do you think of them?
2- I am on an Irish Passport but live in South Africa. Do I need a tourist visa or do I just arrive on a landing visa for 30 days? |

Reach To Teach are the nearest thing to a reliable agent in Taiwan that your going to find. They might underplay the downsides of a particular job but they will actually mention them unlike any other agent I have spoken to. But you can be sure any job they offer you exists and will provide a legit workpermit.
The way the market is at the moment, I see a lot of jobs advertised offering 10 hours a week and an ARC. 10 hours is below the minimum amount required to get an ARC. (14-15 hours I think)
As far as I am aware Eire passport holders get 90 days on landing the same as UK passport holders. If in doubt check the Teco office website for Ireland. It doesn't matter where you live, they are only concerned about the nationality on your passport. |

Thanks for this, its good to know about Reach to Teach.
I am really confused about the visa thing. I have read that you can not convert a landing visa to an ARC. SO does that mean I need to get a tourist visa?
Or is a tourist visa and a landing visa the same?
Thanks |

| Whatever you read is out of date. A school can now convert a landing visa or tourist visa into a working visa. |

Ireland along with the UK both get 90 days upon landing which can be changed to an ARC without doing a Visa run. I know they can do this as I have done it myself when I came back to Taiwan this year.
Tourist Visa/Landing Visa are the same thing. For the countries listed on the page I mentioned its the standard visa for the majority of people coming into the country.
However someone coming from elsewhere would only get 30 days on landing which is not long enough to complete the paperwork to get an ARC issued, which I believe takes around 60 days in total from what the HR guy at my school said.
So all you need to do now is get a flight booked, and start looking for work. Best of luck. |

Lucky son of a gun. 90 day landing visa? Lucky, I guess. I got a 30 day visiting visa; which wasn't a landing visa, and the school was able to extend it without me leaving, and so the ARC card followed. Now, I grin and bear teaching under a supreme commander in chief Loaban. He gives me about 10 hours a week and the rest I do else where. You know how it is. Hours are getting more scarce here by the day as more white faces arrive. |

Yeah it's worrying how few decent jobs there are to be found now, truely the schools hold all the cards nowadays.
Your handle on here was I think my nickname from some of the locals when I lived in the south. "Meigoren....Adogah die..." |

LOL! I knew someone would catch on sooner or later. The kids called me "adogadie" meaning fat pig in Taiwanese. It sounds similar to the Taiwanese word for foreigner.
It's getting tough for a lot of people to find work here. I am quitting an adult school, because the students are just so arrogant, and attend because they are only interested in young handsome foreign males; Mr old adogadie doesn't meet their material criteria: that is, young, full crop of hair, hazel or blue eyes, tall and handsome. I have been able to scrape up an hour or two here and there apart from the 10 hours teaching kindy and elementary kids. Teaching kindies for an hour is just burning me out, though. |
