I'm looking at job opportunities in Mexico. My wife is Asian, Korean to be precise, and we're wondering what the "typical" Mexican attitude, if any, towards an Asian woman might be.
Anyone out there with any knowledge about this? |

The Korean community is fairly large in Mexico City but I think most people here just lump Asians together as 'chinos' or 'chinas'. I've seen some teasing of Korean kids by Mexican kids. |

In general though, the reaction to "different" people in Mexico is more curiosity than racism. This is more likely to happen towards indigenous Mexicans than foreigners, strangely enough. |

I have heard a number of racist comments about Asians from Mexicans (again they don't seem to make a difference between Chinese, Korean or Japanese for example).
It's there and it's real. How much somebody might feel it, that's another story.
I wouldn't let it keep you from coming down to Mexico. |

I agree with prof.

How she's treated will depend as much on her personality as on her country of origin. If she is friendly and outgoing. People will be friendly to her. If she's shy and reserved, they might take that as snobbish and will be less likely to be nice to her---the same thing happens to foriegners of any ethnic group.
We've had two teachers with Asian wives. One was Japanese and one was Chinese. There are visa issues with some countries. The Japanese women had no problems came on a tourist visa and left to visit her family and just came back on a new tourist visa. In the chase of the Chinese national, her husband had to get his Mexican work visa first then apply to sponsor her before she could come into the country. It wasn't that much of a problem to get it, it just time that's all. You may want to contact the nearest Mexican consulate to check on the visa situation for your wife before you proceed in your job search. Just so you have all the information before hand. |
