Hi, all. Thanks for all the great information posted here daily. I need some clarification regarding working in countries other than where one received certification. I'm an American woman in my 50s, am energetic, easy-going, and Buddhist. I have a BA in English, all-but-thesis MA work in Linguistics (theoretical, not applied), and taught ESL and ran the language lab a million years ago in grad school. Long career in major gift fundraising, so lots of public speaking, corporate sponsorship acquisition, large event planning, senior level nonprofit administration experience. One foray into the corporate world for four years during which part of my responsibilities included training/teaching nonprofit and university staff all over the country in the use of fundraising software. I'm through with all that now and want to get TEFL certified in Thailand and then teach there, but want the freedom to teach in Vietnam or elsewhere if I'm not happy longterm in Thailand. I don't want to do the CELTA at this point and have been looking at EBC Int'l, TEFL Int'l and the like instead. Some posts suggest that getting certified non-CELTA in Thailand won't be worth anything in another country. Is that true? Would my teaching/training/public speaking background count for anything in that case? Would I be better off getting the certification in VN/India/China, etc and then a teaching job in Thailand? I know my age is against me, but am hoping my personality, sense of humor, and business experience will compensate. What would you all advise? Thanks!

USA passport = check.
BA = check.
Work visa/permits = possible ANYWHERE / EVERYWHERE in Asia = check.

TEFL/TESOL cert = icing on the cake (brand name would be largely irrelevant).

Your worry about the particular brand of TESOL is moot since you are a degree holder.

One key thing to consider when making your choice for program is to ensure that it is 120 hours AND has 6 (or more) hours of observed practicum with real students.

After that you are good as gold.

ttompatz is spot-on.

You can teach in many places in the world with the BA + TEFL/CELTA cert
