I noticed there's no place for Portugal on Dave's. I hope someone here can help me out.
I teach English in Korea, but am looking to visit some friends in Lisbon next summer for a few weeks. I'm trying to figure what would be a could daily budget estimate. I haven't been in the Western hemisphere for a few years so I'm completely lost on what things might cost.
I might get to stay with my friends, so that would cut out hotels, but I have no idea one could spend in a day just being a good tourist. Food? In city transportation? Trips to the beach? Shopping? Maybe hotel costs just in case things fall through with my friends place.
Thanks for your help. |

It's not an especially expensive city, but as it's the capital you can get ripped off in the more touristy areas.
It's very difficult to provide you with an estimate of your daily cash needs based on what you say (and especially as you mention shopping!) but hotel/hostel costs aside (I stayed at the basic-but-good Residencial Roxi for 18 euros/night) you can manage on 20 euros/day. |

As your query isn't about teaching you'd be better off posting this on tripadvisor or some similar forum where you'd get advice from more people who are on the ground and who could actually give you a wider range of advice than English teachers in Spain. |

Hi,
I am in Portugal at the moment and am looking seriously at moving. The economy is going down the pan especially since from Feb (NI) is going up to over 200 euros per month and salaries are about 800-900 per month. VAT has gone up to 23%.
Go somewhere else. Sorry, that I have not got anything positive to say. |

I'm equally surprised by that. |

It's because the economy remains in the toilet and there is little/no work there. As this thread evidences very nicely - 6 posts since 2010.
People aren't exactly standing in line and beating down the doors to talk about EFL in Portugal. |

I'm sure there's tons of EFL work in Portugal, Lisbon particularly. Whether it's well Paid is a different matter.
IH and the British Council there, and a friend of mine does business classes in company in Lisbon, she didn't seem to have too much trouble getting hours but works a lot. Maybe too much.
Tax is high and salaries are low generally. But compared to Spanish people the Portuguese are generally much better at languages (television) and have various other positive virtues. I would expect more high level learners. |
