Hello,
I'm hoping someone here at Dave's might be able to help me out. I'm writing a research paper about Teaching English abroad and am finding it really hard to find any hard data about how many English teachers there are living abroad. I'm not even sure if anyone is keeping track of this information. So, please let me know of any sources you may know of of TESL statistics, number of teachers living abroad, length of stay, nationalities, or anything related. My focus is on Taiwan but I'd appreciate any information people know of.
Thanks |

Japan certainly doesn't keep any accurate record. There are lots of categories of ESL[sic] teachers anyway.
conversation school
public K-12
private K-12
international school
junior college
technical school
college or university
business English school
privately (teacher) owned school
businesses with their own teachers
etc. |

If you are talking about people doing it LEGALLY (with proper visa and permits) then check the stats of the immigration service of the country you wish to know about. (they have (and often publish) the stats cause they issue the work visas).
If you are talking about "back-packers" working illegally on tourist visas to extend their travels then there are no real stats anywhere.

I remember we discussed this years ago here and there were so many different guesses as to numbers...I was surprised by how large some of the guesses were.

I haven't checked but I would be very surprised if any of the Latin American countries even knew much less published this data, and yes I mean the legal ones.
I wonder if Susan Griffith has any numbers to share in her yearly tome Teaching English Abroad. |

I do know that in Asia, many of the immi offices publish the annual figures (albeit a year or two delayed).
As examples (numbers rounded off for convenience), 30,000 teacher visas issued in Korea last year, ~10,000 issued in Thailand, ~16,000 issued in Japan (although there are other routes to teaching in Japan so the number is not a full picture of ESL/foreign teachers in Japan).
I assume that Taiwan and some of the other countries (like Vietnam and Cambodia) either have similar statistics or also publish their numbers.
