Hello!
Malaysia threads are a bit thin on the ground so would appreciate any feedback on the following...
I'm considering a contract in KL which pays 4500 per month and comes with accommodation. Is this an ok salary? Salaries mentioned in past threads for private schools seem to be around the 3000-4000 mark with no mention of accommodation, so the offer doesn't seem too bad, but I would like any comments from teachers with KL experience.
Thanks in advance!! |

Yes, that is a good salary especially with accommodation being provided. Hopefully, the place is close to your school so as to avoid the commuting hassle common to KL. If not, consider using a motorcycle instead of car. |

Hi
I would say that RM5000 a month is rather low. Is this in an international school? if so, anything from RM10000 a month would be more usual. I earned RM4000 a month 15 years ago at one of the KL universities.

Income tax is low, around 5%.
If the school signs you up for the Employee's Provident Fund (EPF) then you decide how much to deduct. The max rate is 11% from the employee and 12% from the employer. I only take the max so don't know what the min level is.
Also, if the school signs you up for SOCSO or Takaful, which are insurance schemes run by the gov't. My school opted out. (Yeah!)
So, on my base salary, I get 26.4% taken out:
Tax 3.4%
My EPF cont. 11%
My Employer EPF cont. 12%
I don't mind the EPF withdrawals because it has allowed me to save for retirement and after 15 years (and annual dividends running 4-6%) I have a nice chunk of money saved. By taking the max rate, I have added another 12% salary -in effect- from my school not counting the small add'l tax on that extra. |

Good point. There are schools in Malaysia, and then there are a few international schools. For a school, the RM4500 with accommodation is fairly decent. Salaries in KL have gone up, of course, since I taught there in 1996-2000 (I have been in Kuantan, 2000 to present). But they have not gone up into the RM10k+ range except for PhDs at universities and maybe a few other limited exceptions.
International schools, on the other hand, are like islands in the ocean. They teach mostly the children of expats and pay very well, over RM10k for some positions and levels of experience. I just wouldn't go using the exceptional salaries when discussing normal schools.
I have a relative teaching at an int'l school. With only a BA and 4 years experience (and US Cert), she makes RM5.6k base with RM0.8k housing allowance. Some of my former students have obtained computer programming jobs at senior levels in KL and they are just now starting to get into the RM8k+ range. Teachers are not as well paid as computer programmers on the whole. (Yes, there are exceptions, but people should plan and budget for the norm.)
Your salary offer is good DanGUK; take it and settle in. If you do well by the school, you will get regular raises. I have gotten pretty much 5% increases annually for 15 years. If I chose to jump (lompat) to different schools, the pay increases could have been higher, but eventually one runs out of schools that will employ newby expats. When you get older, it is easier and probably better to stay at a school where you are well-liked and fit in rather than risk jumping into a new situation. |
