I've never been to Hong Kong yet, but am interested in teaching ESL there. How much is the cost of living in Hong Kong. For example, how much would the following cost?

-Monthly rent of an apartment if sharing with a roommate (of an apartment that has a kitchen, fridge, and stove), and in a nice, but not necessarily the most expensive part of Hong Kong

-Utilities, if splitting with a roommate

-Avg. deposit that might be expected before moving in

-Comfortable (but not living like a king) cost of food each month if most food is bought from the grocery store but I were to go to a fast food place once in a while

-Transportation costs per month for public transportation (cost of a monthly pass if there is such a thing)

-Cost of eating at a nice, but not fancy restaurant

-Monthly cell phone service, plus the cost of buying an actual cell phone, sim card

-By the way, how much per minute does it usually cost to make calls to the US?

-Cost of internet service per month, plus the cost of installation (by the way, how much do laptops run for in Hong Kong?)

-Cost of doing laundry (machine + detergent) per month?

-Cost of a haircut

-Cost of seeing a movie at a local cinema

-Avg. of monthly membership at a local gym for weightlifting

*I know this is a long list, but trying to be extra careful. Thanks for your help!

This has been asked and answered (or argued about) previously, so have a look at past topics in this forum. For example, on the very first page of this forum scrolling down you'll come to this discussion: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=81009&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

It won't answer everything you asked, but close enough to give you an idea from multiple perspectives.

Ditto what Kowlooner says, but just for fun:

-Monthly rent of an apartment if sharing with a roommate
I know folks paying 5000HK$ on islands (2.5 each)

-Utilities, if splitting with a roommate
200-500 per month

-Avg. deposit that might be expected before moving in
1 month deposit and 1 month advance

-Cost of eating at a nice, but not fancy restaurant
McD 20-30, Pizza Hut -100, nice not fancy - 150

-Monthly cell phone service 100+
-plus the cost of buying an actual cell phone similar to US
- sim card can be zero, just put in the money you want to top up

-By the way, how much per minute does it usually cost to make calls to the US?
Dunno, probably expensive, I Skype

-Cost of internet service per month, 250 for 8Mbits per sec
-plus the cost of installation I forgot - minimal
-(by the way, how much do laptops run for in Hong Kong?, similar to US

-Cost of doing laundry (machine + detergent) per month?
Dunno, got one in the flat

-Cost of a haircut
Bloke round the corner does it for 20, my wife goes elsewhere for 800. I need to have a word

-Cost of seeing a movie at a local cinema
50-100

-Avg. of monthly membership at a local gym for weightlifting
180 cheap, good (LCSD), 400 scummy rip off(California), 1000 deluxe (Pure)

.The opinions expressed above may not represent that of the management, etc, etc disclaimer
