I'm interested in upgrading my teaching qualifications (or from an academic standpoint STARTING my qualifications), and would like to see what options are available to me.
I've looked into Hong Kong University, however it's too expensive for me as a non-local. |

A B.Ed, as I don't have a BA.
There's a possibility that I might shoot for a BA in English, and then get the PGDE later, but ideally I'd like to take this route (if I don't take the MA TESOL route that I've been considering....yes there is a shortcut ) |

Sudz, you seem to be expecting us to do your online research for you! As it happens, a slow day at the office today, so I spent a few minutes on this ...
The HK Institute of Education does a four-year BEd and accepts international students. Tuition fees are US$9,640 per year. They calculate that with accomodation and living costs added on you will require about US15K a year, all up. My guess is that HKIED is probably at the cheaper end of the HK tertiary institutes.
You would be able to offset some of your costs with p/t work, but it's very difficult to say how much. My guess is that during term time you'd be up against it with course work to do much on the side.
Anyway, here's the link.

No worries Sudz. I think you'll be lucky though to get any direct feedback from someone who's done a HK-based BEd or BA on this forum - the vast majority here (and it's not a very active forum) are degree holders from somewhere outside HK. |

My boss at my school directly told me that a Post grad in Ed, even through HKU does not really hold any merit overseas, and is only really valid in HK.. Is this true? |

Yes it is true. You couldn't register as a teacher in NZ, Aus, or the UK with it but it may come in handy for ESL jobs in Asia. |

What? You're claiming that a HK PGDE isn't recognised in NZ, Oz or the UK? That has to be nonsense! If not, please provide some evidence. |

I've heard that the HK practicum is not equal to what we did back home. That seems to be the case from what I've seen of uni. students working at my schools here: they're gone almost before we learn their names, and they do almost nothing in the classrooms. |
