Hi I'm a 33 year old Australian. I've been teaching in Vietnam for the last year and have a CELTA. I studied Mandarin in high school and university and are looking to head to either Beijing or Shanghai to teach next year (March)
I have found a few jobs on the internet that pay around 10,000 RMB a month. I was wondering, with the experience and qualifications I have, if i could land a job paying 10, 000 a month in Beijing or Shanghai?
Also, I've heard both of these cities are quite expensive. Is 10, 000 a month enough to live comfortably? I'll have around $2,500 USD to take with me to set up a new apartment and cover living expenses before my first pay. Does this seem like enough mony as a buffer?
Also, would it be possible to get my health check for a Z-visa done at an international hospital/clinic in Vietnam?
Thanks |

You will have no problem finding a job for over 10,000 RMB and free housing in Beijing. Shanghai, housing might be more of a problem however.
Shanghai is more expensive than Beijing, but not that much. People often falsely claim that Beijing is so expensive, but the fact is that it is no more expensive than where I am (small city China).
Basically, the McDonald's in Shenyang and Dalian are more expensive than Beijing. The subway in Beijing is a measly 1 RMB (last I was there) whereas Dalian I think is 2 or 3.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But I know it's more than 1.
At this very moment I have seen jobs in Beijing at over 12,000 RMB a month, apartment provided. Key money in Beijing and Shanghai is quite expensive, and some of the rents are astronomical for foreigners. Best to go with pre-offered housing.
As for the medical check, I honestly can't be sure. One thing I do know however is that if you want to teach LEGALLY on a proper visa in BJ or SH, you need to do all the bells and whistles from outside China. |

10 000 should be easy to find in shanghai. the plus of it all is, if they like you and your style, they'll toss plenty of work your way. trust me, there's lots of opportunity in shanghai.
how's the situation in viet nam? |
