Was wondering if anyone has any current info about working conditions, salary, etc. for direct hires (i.e., not through agencies such as Bell/Obeikan) in the foundation program at KSU in Riyadh...

What could someone who has an MA in TESL and 3 yrs. Saudi experience at the tertiary level expect here in terms of an employment package? Thanks.

KSU no longer employs ESL teachers as direct hires. If you want to work there, you will have to go through Bell/Obeikan. For info on that, consult the many detailed threads on the subject.

Got it. Thanks, Cleo. I think I have enough info on Bell/Obeikan, though, to last me a lifetime...hehe

I had also been thinking about looking at possible openings in KSU's College of Languages and Translation where linguistics courses and other foreign languages are taught (since I also teach other languages).

You see, I've been teaching English at the foundation level for several years in several countries and would like to move in other direction if possible...Do you happen to know anything about the qualifications they look for (i.e., is it for PhDs only?) at the College mentioned above?

Generally, Saudi unis insist on teachers having PhDs to teach 'academic' (ie non Foundation Year) courses.

Often, the courses are taught at such a low level that there really is no need for the teacher to have a PhD, but this is KSA and appearances matter above all else. So most colleges would prefer to hire a 'doktor' with terrible teaching skills than an excellent teacher who was a mere MA holder.

That said, there's no harm in trying, though with your background they will probably suggest you apply to Bell/Obeikan.

Thanks so much. I had an inkling that the Phd-only requirement would be applied at this level (just like practically everywhere else in the world). But, as you suggest, I may give it a try in case they are willing to bend their Phd-only requirement for, say, a need for a Spanish or French instructor.

You have been most helpful!

Have you got an MA in either French or Spanish? If you don't, I really wouldn't fancy your chances of getting a job teaching either in a Saudi uni.

It's also worth poining out that many courses at KSU are taught through the medium of Arabic.

Yes, my Spanish qualifications include an MA. So, I'll give it a shot....

Thanks, again:)
