I've been teaching ESL in Asia since 1995, mostly in Korea. I have an MS Ed in Online Curriculum Design, a BA Liberal Arts and some Adobe software certifications. I am about halfway thru the ONTESOL 250 hour program and plan to do the DELTA in the spring after my current contract with EPIK ends. The DELTA program has a specialty part in Online/Blended Learning, which I plan on doing.

My question is, with my background and the fact that I turn 52 in November work in my favor or against me? I'm familiar with the general East Asia market but not the ME. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks.

Your age shouldn't be an issue... but the lower level of online learning may be a bigger problem for you. It is not like Asia where they are really pushing online education.

That said, some of the UAE universities/colleges like Higher Colleges of Technology, Zayed University, and AUSharjah would be a good place to start. There may also be opportunities is smaller private universities. Check out their websites to see what they are doing. If you are looking for next academic year, you would want to be applying in early 2011.

60 is the usual cut-off. Some places operate a bar on recruitment after 55.

In theory, a lot of places in Oman are interested in online learning/anything CALL-related. The more you can do, the better.

In practice, well... there are quite a few technological glitches.

Some places have a 55 and under limit. Some have a 60 and under limit. In Saudi I have friends who are 65 and still working. It depends on the country. Denise is right; maybe you should try Oman. Some of my ex Gulag pals got jobs in Oman after the age of 58.
