I said I would give an update on this and sure enough, all paperwork completed and we go to immigration next week to finish things up. Not sure how the school did it, or if it has to do with the fact that we are certified teachers... but we are getting our FM3's without having had anything apositlled.
When I have it in hand I will update again. However, the man from immigration was at the school this past week and said everything was in order.

I'd never heard of an "apostille" when I first went to immigration, besides I had nothing to "apostillate" or whatever it is you do. The sponsorship of my employer was sufficient.

It makes a big difference in places where a particular school has a good working relationship with Immigration. Quite typical of the way things go in Mexico. In some places teacher's wouldn't be working on a tourist visa until their FM3 was issued, either, and they would need every single detail in order to get the approval. Best to be prepared, and arrive with an Apostilled degree or certificate, in case you want to work independently. It's a nightmare to try to get all this done after the fact, should Immigration demand it.

Do officially have work visa now Smile Again, not sure why we were able to do this without having documents apostilled. It is possible though.

I agree with a previous poster though and unless you have a job upfront who says NOT to have things apostilled (as in our case), it would be best to have it done just in case!

I took a new teacher into immigration yesterday. After having filled out the form online, the only papers they asked for were a) copy of passport, b) copy of FMT and c) letters from the applicant and the school. I asked "do you want copies of the CELTA, translated?" They told me "no, that is the responsibility of the company. If you sponsor him, you are saying that you need him and he is qualified." Whole process took 20 minutes and they said the FM3 should be ready in less than two weeks. I was stunned.

The new rules make it a lot easier to get an FM3.

I wonder how much easier the new rules make it for those applying to teach independently . . .
