I'm an older newbie, recent CELTA grad with BS, and I'm 55/male. Is there an Asian country where I might have the best shot? I'd like to teach in Vietnam or Thailand if possible. I believe the limit in Vietnam is 65. Thank you. |

Limits range from 50 to 65 within many countries. If you start at a job when you're younger and stay, they're more likely to help you than if you try to start working for them at age 60.

Thank you! Wow, not sure what to think after visiting the link you sent. I'm thinking I better move to Vietnam now, or at least go there for 30 days to job hunt. Do you know if the schools are shut down most of Jan. for New Year. Thanks again. |

They're not shut down, but business is slow, so schools might not be hiring until a couple of weeks into February. I know several teachers your age who seem to get on fine. Some aren't particularly experienced, either. |

I know several teachers who started teaching in Thailand after age 60 and the advantage is that if you get a position at a government university before you turn 65, it is relatively easy for the university to keep you on after age 65, the supposed retirement age for government uni lecturers.
Also, I simply do not agree with the premise of the statement above as it has not been the case in my personal experience as well as what I have observed over many years of working in Thailand and other countries. |

Thailand is supposed to have a retirement age of 65, the Thai lecturers in the universities get around this by becoming part time employees for the books after this time. I have attended countless retirement parties only to keep working with the retirees for another 3-5 years.
It is more difficult for Foreigners to keep extending for more than a couple of years in the secondary schools or language centres, but Thais are very creative so I guess it depends on the case by case basis, Some could become volunteers and get a volunteers salary and then top it up with other perks |

As far as I know, there is NO age limit in VN. I personally know 1 teacher who is 75 yr. and is still working at a school in Thu Duc.
I knew another who was 68 yr. and worked at AUSP but I've lost contact with him within the last couple of years.
I am 55 yr. and still get hounded by other schools that want me to come work for them. |

Yes, there is no age limit in VN. If someone has a good reputation then they will have work. |

I worked with an American who was 72.
He's 75 now and I bet he's still going strong. |

Yes, Chatty
I know a couple of fellas who are in the early 70s, teaching and honestly love it. They have energy, and like what they do.
Important reminder for us all. |
