I wuz offered a job there years ago...and wuz happy as I know how real a benefit furnished and provided housing is in Japan. Nevertheless, my wife, who is Japanese, didn't have any interest in returning...for visits, much less living. I, reluctently, turned it down.

Later, i wuz glad as I heard of how they treated teachers and their curfew policy. Thanks...but, Uh-uh...

Your friend should be able to provide all the information you need. I don't see why you need a second opinion unless you don't trust him.

Here is a 2008 thread. Not very promising to me, but depends on you and current conditions (e.g., curfew on housing).

According to this 2010 ad, they pay half the health insurance premiums, so it must be shakai hoken. That means you will have to pay about 20,000 yen from the beginning. Add a spouse, and you'll pay a bit more.

You may also want to be aware of the teachers' petition against unfair labor practices there as of May 2010.

I know this is a little unrelated to teaching, but that's actually the school I attended for my study abroad in Japan.

I can't say about teaching there specifically, but I did know a bunch of the foreign teachers and they seemed to not have anything too terrible to complain about working there- and I knew a few foreign teachers who had been there for years and years and really enjoyed it there.

The downside seems to be the bit about the on-campus apartments/living and possible curfew, but I'm not sure on the specific details of how exactly this is enforced.

I also read up on the Union issue.... But 15 hours a week of teaching over 5 days sounds like heaven to me.
Your choice, of course, but those seem like pretty serious union issues to me.

Any other advice about moving/living in Japan would be most helpful.
Like what? That covers a huge area.

Also, could anyone recommend a good intensive Japanese program for the summer months?
I don't know of any personally, but the online Japan Times has a link to many.
