I thought it would be interesting for the people that live in Mexico City to list here what they like to in their off-time. In other words, certain museums, restaurants, parks, bars or whatever you would recommend. I have not been in this city long, so I will just list a couple obvious things to me:

Palacio de Bellas Artes- More people can talk more about all the things this is used for, but it is a beautiful building that has nice murals and seasonally rotating artist-specific exhibits. Through January is Saturnino Herrn which I enjoyed immensely.

Pulque- There are pulqueras as well as other places serving this unique, mild/low-moderate alcoholic drink. It could be described to some as an acquired taste. The male ejaculate consistency may turn some off but I say it is a must try anyway.

Metropolitan Cathedral- Just...wow.

Santa Sangre- Not really a site, but one of my favorite movies and filmed in Mexico City. It's by Alejandro Jodorowsky, so if you're familiar with his work you may or may not like it. Think mildly disturbing, mild gore, and lots of weird.

There are so many good museums here. One of my favorites is San Ildefonso, behind the metropolitan cathedral:

They usually have great rotating exhibits.

If you like to go out and be around an eclectic bunch, the terrace of the Centro Cultural de Espaa is a great place to be, just get there early (around 8 pm):

I really like to see the philharmonic:

There are lots of small art shows in Colonia Roma, as well.

Great spot...I went by this year looking for ofrendas as I'd seen there before but nothing this time round.

The Museo de Arte Popular has ever-changing exhibits and workshops. Right now, piatas are on display.

I concede that for cultural events and venues, Mexico City wins hands down.

Does anyone know off hand if school has a time-out Feb 3, 2011? I'd love to see the Kite Festival, but I need at least 3 days off to travel there and back.

Regards,
Dragonlady

You should have a long weekend around then Dragonlady for Feb 5, la dia de la constitucion. I don't have a 2011 calendar yet to check, but the closest Monday should be off.

This is a handy reference for the various holidays: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Mexico

The first Monday of February is the observance for Da de la Constitucin, so will be Feb 7th, 2011.

A couple of current things that might be of interest is a fantastic light show in the Zocalo, nightly at 9 pm. I believe the last day is this coming Monday, or night, as it were. If you are a history buff there is an exhibition of documents of Independence at the Archivo National, its free, through the end of November. Aside from the exhibit, its a lovely building, used to house an infamous prision (Lecumberri), worth seeing for the architecture alone. Its a bit off the beaten path, but an easy walk from Metro San Lazaro on the Pink Line. There is an interesting temporary mural in front right now, reproductions of various documents that is also quite interesting.

I just checked the schedule of the "espectculo multimedia" at the Zcalo, and this weekend will be the last time you'll be able to see it, starting at 9 p.m. I'm hoping to go even though I am not fond of the huge crowds I imagine will be there for the final two shows.

The main post office has a small museum (downtown DF) and there is the Mexican Army musuem a short distance away. Both are free and I visited both today.
