If I'm right, a tourist visa for Mexico lasts six months. If I'm working for a language school and I get to the six month point wanting to continue, what are my options to stop me from being chucked into a detention centre or something similarly gruesome because I've overstayed?
I would use the search function, but for some reason it's just showing a blank page on my browser. Thanking you in advance... |

Not many options...leave the country and return, by air or land border. Or, apply for an FM3. |

You don't want to end up like "Crash":

Best bet is to always have legal papers to be in Mexico. Even if you choose to work under the table, having a valid tourist card/visa means that you won't be stopped just walking down the street and you get deported. In the unlikely event that INM finds out you are working, you will usually be given the option to stop work and apply for a FM-3. Of course you can't work legally until the FM-3 is approved and you can bet that INM will check your place of work (at random) to make sure you aren't working while waiting. |

Yeah fair enough, the best option is to apply for the FM3 in advance of the six months if need be. So is that a difficult or easy thing to do, to go from a tourist visa to FM3 if I am working at the time, and how long would it take to go through? |

It should take up to 4 weeks under normal circumstances and is relatively easy to do though it might take 2 or 3 trips to the migra office. |
