Two questions from a newbie interested in the possibility of teaching in Thailand.

I have a Political Science B.A., but no teaching experience as of yet and no TEFL certificate. Is a TEFL certificate always required to teach legally in Thailand? If so, do schools frequently permit you to receive some free trainining (by the school) prior to employing you and then give you some sort of TEFL certificate for that to count for the legal requirement so that they can employ you?

The second question is regarding criminal record check requirements. To work legally in Thailand, I've heard you have to obtain a CRC. But I wonder, does the CRC need to be from your home country, from Thailand (an internal CRC), or both?

If from your home country, as I am a US citizen, do you need an FBI criminal record check, or is a state police record check sufficient? Is/are the criminal record check(s) necessary before you apply and are accepted for the job, or do you get the CRC after you get accepted for the position? If after, then is it best to have the home country CRC already completed before you enter Thailand, and have the results with you?

Thanks!

It depends on where you get your visa issued at.

From personal experience (recent):

Immigration (the office in BKK) DID want to see my (original) degree and transcripts before issuing my "B" visa (in country). I changed my status from 30-day entry stamp (tourist) to "B" visa here in Thailand (you must have 21 days or more remaining on your stamp or you will not be able to change your status).

They (immigration) did NOT ask for my CRC nor did they ask for my TESOL cert. (I did have both with me in case they did).
The labor office did not ask for my TESOL cert either before they issued my work permit.

The Consulates in North America DO want to see the degree + transcripts AND a valid state CRC (from your state of residence) before they issue a non-immigrant "B" (work) visa.

Again, I am not sure that a TESOL cert is an immigration requirement if you have a degree. It may be an employer requirement as may some classroom experience.
