Hello
I'm a newly qualified ESL teacher and I have an interview with Saxoncourt recruitment, for a June position at Shane English School Japan (SESJ).
If anyone has ANY information about this school, that would be great!
ie. reputation, standards, atmosphere.

Big and popular as they are, Shane gets a lot of negative reviews.
What do you expect from an employer like them, and what have they already told you? Perhaps with answers to these questions, people with experience can provide a seasoned outlook. |

I had an OK time with them, but left 8 years ago. Things may have changed.
I can't be bothered to write my thoughts again, but if you have a look through my posts, you'll find several lengthy ones about Shane. |

I've been here 10 years and while I have no personal experience with Shane, all that I've secondhand about them has been negative. That's ominous. |

If you want a great salary and great conditions, don't come to Japan. There are too many teachers chasing too few jobs. (At least it's better than Korea....)
If nowhere but Japan will do, then don't be too put off. You could do a lot worse than Shane. You could also do better, but you're at the back of a very long queue. Think of Shane as your apprenticeship.
Here's a fairly balanced account of working at Shane:

And here's a post more typical of this forum (we do love to grumble!):

My advice is: be prepared. Read your contract, and read between the lines. Learn about Japanese health insurance, employment law, housing and so on. Then go for it. |
