Hey there fellow ESLers,

So I decided that I wanna travel around abit and teach. Ive already have a degree in BA and I was planning on getting a CELTA and teaching English.

After doing some research and looking around online Im starting to think it will be a better idea to just go back to college and get licensed to teach middle grade mathematics. This would take 1.5 yrs and I could start in Jan.

The reason I'm considering this is because I feel like you can get alot better jobs through International Teaching Fairs that pay good wages, airfare, housing, ect.

I just feel it would be better to just postpone my travel plans for now and get licensed to get the better job and be able to save some rather than just most likely teaching English and just making enough to live, eat, go out ect.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

It's a decent plan. The only couple of possible hitches are that most international schools also want teachers to have at least a couple of years of teaching in their home countries first. Second, that jobs aren't always abundant everywhere - it might take you a bit of time to find a slot, after getting the degree and teaching for a couple of years.

You're right about the money and benefits, though - it can be better to wait and get qualified for the better jobs if possible.

If you do this, then don't bother with the CELTA. I don't know about other parts of the world, but international schools in Mexico struggle to find math and science teachers, so lack of experience might be less of a problem.

You cant' bump a thread after only a day. The maths license sounds good. It's always good to have extra quals. Though spiral is right about the two years experience.

Well, if one wants to be pedantic about it, a poster 'can' (has the ability to) bump a post after only a day...but it's probably not really necessary. Very Happy Sometimes we just have slow days on Dave's and fewer regulars are hanging around. Have patience; answers will come.

Go for the Maths or Math. Forget all this pseudo-science of Teflology.

There'd certainly be a lot of opportunities workwise but ....
Maths teachers are not known to be beloved of anyone really. A hard job but always a good qualification to have.

I mean Maths is not a subject that seems to be generally liked at high school and therefore Maths teachers often seem to have a harder time than teachers of other subjects. I always felt especially sorry for the teachers that were scheduled with Maths last period on a Friday afternoon.

Of course that's not always true but it has been what I've noticed when I've worked in different high schools. If you work in a top level school then this is likelier to be easier as kids will often get more support at home and a learning environment will be expected and encouraged. And that's true of every school subject.
As I wrote before, it is a good qualification to have and Maths teachers are in short supply in many countries. You won't lack teaching opportunities.
