Can anyone give me some information on Fukuyama? (Besides the basic info that one can easily find on the internet...) I'd like to find out if there are good stores/markets/restaurants/nightlife/bars/clubs/expat community...and if not, where are (nearby) places that have those things. Any recommendations are most welcome!

I was just in Fukuyama last week for a business trip. Are you coming here to work with Peppy Kids Club by any chance? They were missing teachers so I had to cover in the area.

Fukuyama is a small city. There's everything you need but it's small. It has a beautiful castle. I don't know about the nightlife, I mostly wandered around during the day. It has a foreigner community, and at least one gaijin bar. The shopping is great, a few department stores and the usual 'big city' shops you find everywhere else in Japan. It's pretty nice and clean, and near the water. I was actually staying in a beautiful small city called Onomichi, which is stunning.

Hiroshima is about an hour away from there, Hiroshima is amazing, one of my favourite cities in Japan.

I wrote a blog post about my stay in Fukuyama:

You can check out my blog, I think I posted about Hiroshima back in March.

Thanks for the reply. I really like your blog!! I've just spent about an hour reading through it.
I'm actually going to be working for a small private school there. Please let me know if you can recommend any cafes/restaurants in Fukuyama! Or any historical/cultural sites in the nearby areas that I should check out.

Hi, never been to Fukuyama but my friend is from there and she really likes the place. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say with a population that size, you probably got a few good bars but no major clubs. If you wanna dance till the first train a better bet would be Hiroshima.

To the west you have Kurashiki and Okayama. Kurashiki is about 45 minutes away by local train, and is a good place for a daytrip (much like Onomichi, which I also recommend). 15 minutes past Kurashiki there is Okayama, which has a few decent clubs, but probably Hiroshima's are better.

Any place you're gonna go to in Japan will have karaoke, izakayas, movie theaters and the like. Hope you enjoy Fukuyama.

Thank you! I think Fukuyama is a nice, livable city, but not the place to party until dawn.

I saw many cool little cafs and shops, around the main shopping area in front of the station. Nothing in particular I can recommend, I only ate some nice ramen.

As for cultural sights I only saw the castle. Onomichi is only 20 min away and it is so beautiful. As mentioned above, Kurashiki is also gorgeous and traditional. Okayama is another 'small-ish' city, and of course you can always go to Shikoku for some real countryside (that's where I live now).
