So... the crime that has increased is that maids are working outside of their main jobs? Moonlighting... cleaning for other people than their sponsors... oh horrors!! Not to mention the more lucrative ways to add to their paltry incomes.
Up through the first paragraph, one might have thought that these women had actually been involved in real crime.

Penalties
According to the Omani Labour Laws Article 114, every employer, who intentionally lets a non-Omani worker authorised to work for him work for any other employer, shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of not more than one month and a fine of not less than RO1,000 and not exceeding RO2,000 for each worker or he shall be subject to one of these two penalties.
The penalty is to be multiplied as per the number of workers for whom the penalty was imposed. In addition, the employer shall be prevented from bringing non-Omani workers for a period of not more than two years. The penalty will be increased in cases of recurrence of the offence.
Punishment
The non-Omani employee working in the Sultanate without permission from the designated authority or working for a non-authorised employer shall be punished by being imprisoned for a period of not more than one month and paying a fine of not less than RO400 and not more than RO800.
The accused may also be subject to one of these two penalties. In addition, the work permit, if any, shall be cancelled and the employee will be repatriated at the expense of the employer and shall be banned from entering the Sultanate.
The law is very careful in mentioning that the Omani sponsor has to 'intentionally' break the law whilst the expat just has to get caught.
I would love to see a independent authority monitor all the Chinese and Asians brought in by police sponsors and then get them to explain what these 'ladies' are doing in villas with no apparent work and where the 'free visa' builders were ever employed legally. |
