Hi!

I'm a current ESL teacher about to leave my contract next sping. I plan on taking the CELTA for a month in either Chiang Mai, Bangkok or Phuket. I'm really just looking for the the cheapest place to live for the month. I'm simple when it comes to living, i don't need anything fancy just a place to sleep and study i suppose (I'm even considering couchsurfing there for the month if I can find someone, but I don't know if that'll be enough study space). I'm a cheap person as it is. Some food, a few beers here and there...nothing major for me. I'm down to live on pennies. But, really how much could i expect for that month in one of those places? Also, how much is general would you say it is to back pack over there for a month. I will be doing that prior to my course and maybe a bit afterwards too.

Thanks

You can backpack for as little as US$20-30 per day (food and lodging) if you are moving around and as little as $400 per month if you get a month long rental and stay in one place.

Unless you are really penniless and are into serious deprivation while you study you should plan to spend about $700-1000 for your month in Thailand doing your CELTA. Double that if you are into finding a lady companion (G/F) of the day/week/month or staying in BKK.

Hey Yahooti,

I took the CELTA in BKK back in 2009. Im a cheap person too, but I love eating and I have a thing for cleanliness, so I wouldnt stay just anywhere.

My expenses during the month I took the CELTA were as follows:

Rent: 4500 THB (rented a room with bathroom in a guesthouse near Soi Ngam Duplee / Rama IV rd, near Lumpini)

Food: breakfast was provided by the school (yay!) lunch & dinner (street food and discounted Tesco food) 1500 THB

Public transport: I walked from my guesthouse to the school every day (a 30-minute walk)

Internet: I used the computers at the school

Socialising: I didnt have much time for that, but went out a couple of times, 400 THB

Various: I had to buy some "semi-formal" clothes & shoes to be presentable during teaching practice, 600 THB

This comes up to a great total of 7,000 THB in one month, just below 150.
