Hi guys,

I recently had an interview for a university position (only 10-15minutes to assess my oral speaking skills I presume). I have been asked to give 2 lesson plans.

1) Oral English lesson plan
2) Written English lesson plan (short paragraph with a topic and supporting details)

Students are around 20 years old, medium level proficiency, and around 30 in each class.

I have searched around the forums and have a decent idea for a oral English lesson, however, could use some help for a written English class. I have no formal teaching experience, so could use some help!!

If you don't know how to write an oral English lesson plan, a written English lesson plan, and have no teaching experience, then it's simple... you shouldn't be teaching.

Whilst frenchfrydoggy is blunt with his opinion, I am inclined to agree.

Assuming you did a TEFL or similar, what did you learn that is relevant to this assignment?

If you have not done any kind of TEFL, then I strongly urge you to do so. If you struggle to cobble together lesson plans now, you're likely to struggle if and when you get a job.

Perhaps you should apply for a job that is less demanding in application criteria.

Written English plan:

What are you going to do during Spring Festival? or

What are you going to do during summer vacation? or

What do you want to do when you finish school? or

...........

talk about a good topic sentence and good sentence structure. What level is this, if I may ask?

Generally on the first day I have the kids do introductions, then I do some listening exercises so I can have some idea of how well they will understand me when I talk about things.

It's not rocket science, and I have to say, if you are really that confused about what to teach on the first day perhaps you shouldn't be teaching. I had the same request for my first job in China, and I didn't have any formal teaching experience. I typed out a lesson plan covering what I said above (introductions, some listening, and a short written assignment) and I got the job. It seemed pretty obvious to me.

Writing Lesson 3.1 - Writing about things in correct order - Time

A very important part of good writing is writing about things in the correct order. There are 4 basic orders to follow;

a) time order 按时间顺序
= what happened first - what happened second - what happened third

b) place / space order
= on top - in the middle - at the bottom OR on the left - in the middle - on the right

c) list order (importance order)
= very important - important - a little important

d) general order
= when there is no time order, when there is no place / space order and when
there is no order of importance, sentences should be grouped into paragraphs
which are about the same SINGLE idea or thought within an essay or report.

Today, we will study time order.

When writing about things in time order, we begin sentences with the following expressions;

First ����..
Then ����
Next ����.
After (the action) OR After that ��.
Following (the action) or Following that ���
Later �����
Finally �����

Of course, we still need a topic sentence - a sentence to explain what we are writing about.

Here's an example:-

Yesterday I went shopping for a new shirt.
First, I caught a bus to the subway station.
Then, I traveled by subway to downtown Guangzhou.
Next, I walked to Jusco department store and bought a shirt.
After I bought the shirt, I had lunch at KFC.
Following lunch, I walked around Tee Mall window shopping.
Later, I had a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
Finally, I returned home.

Your writing task today is an essay in PAST TENSE - "Everything I did before I went to class this morning" (You need to write about at least 7 things that you did)

My lesson plan format, from when I was teaching:

Target language: (grammar points, situational communicative skills, etc)
Vocab list:(Bboard right)
Target Questions:(Bboard left)(the Qs that get asked come exam time, because these exercise the target language)
Comprehension Questions:
<All of the above, about 1/3rd of an A4 page>

Activities: (list of activities with approximate timeline)
<about half a page, maybe more>

Materials required:(what do I have to remember to bring to class?)
<one or two lines>

After class assessments:
<the rest of the page and usually half the back of the page as well>
