Just wondering what expectations I should have from recruiting agency phone interviews. What will the questions be like? A normal teaching interview? Any examples?

I have a phone interview tomorrow with a Canadian recruiting agency that most of you are probably somewhat familiar with.

Just any tips would be great!

-I searched for this and found some tips about being dressed nicely and standing to sound more confident. Also smiling through the phone helps show enthusiasm. I'm just looking for more concrete things like types of questions so I can prepare a bit more.

Aside from the above link, you have to realize that you will ask the same questions in a live interview as you would on the phone. The only things you can't really ask are to see things right then and there.

Also, what you ask will depend on what was in the advertisement, what type of institution it is, and what country it is in.

I wouldn't have thought that would help you much. You just need to remember that the other person won't be giving a hoot what you are wearing, or what you are doing, as long as you answer the questions competently.

The last time someone called me up for a telephone interview they didn't give me any prior warning, and I was sitting on the toilet. I just carried on, in both ways, and I still passed! Laughing

There's a fair amount of research that suggests the above does make a positive difference for telephone interviews.

Do you mean TeachAway? I've not had a great deal to do with recruiting agencies and generally just had chatty conversations about what I'm looking for with advice from them re: further interviews for jobs in a particular region. It's best to be prepared though to answer or at least discuss your answers to some of the typical interview questions that might arise:

What made you choose teaching as a career?
(What made you choose our organisation / school?)
How would you deal with a student who was dominating the class by trying to answer all your questions?
Describe a lesson that you consider was successful. What made it successful?
Describe a lesson that you think wasnt successful. What didnt go well, how did you handle it and what would you do differently next time?
Where do you see yourself professionally in 5/10 years time?
(at the end) Do you have any questions for us?
There are likely to be language related questions for TEFL.

High school:
Describe behaviour management techniques youve used in the classroom that have worked well for you. / What are some examples of behaviour management techniques that you consider effective with young people?
How would you deal with a student behaving in a threatening manner to other students?

With high school theres likely to be a focus on behaviour management plus specific questions regarding your main teaching subject (Describe how youd go about teaching ..... to ...[year level].. etc.).

Google typical interview questions - one example below - and good luck with your recruiting interview.
