Hi everybody!

How did you get a job in Vietnam? Did you just roll in and find one, or try to get one online? I've noticed a bunch advertised around the internet. I'm currently at a private school in Korea, and want to escape the teach to the test academies, is there another option in Vietnam?

Thanks for any and all insight!

If youre coming to Hanoi-PM me- I'll get you a job.
Otherwise-you must front up-Most dont believe the internet applicants as so many of them are armchair wannabees who dont have the guts to take the step. If you are here and they can see your face- you have the job.
From where you are coming from, no comparisons mind you, but lets just say you will relax more here.
I have a blog which the Dave police dont allow me to mention here- so if you want to see it all about how to get the job etc and how to survive here-pm me.

I'm in a similar boat, working at a Korean hagwon and looking to move on to more interesting climes. Could you PM me snollygoster, I don't think I have enough posts to send a PM yet.

Best thing to do is the turn up and start applying. You should have at least half a dozen interviews within a week of applying. If you have a CELTA (or equivalent) of course. Vietnam is a cheap place to stay, so you're not going to go hungry while you're waiting for companies to reply.

I won't have CELTA but I'll have a year and a half experience in Korea. It seems like I'll need to get CELTA, and have no problem getting it, but is it absolutely necessary?

In terms of getting a job, once you're on the ground is it a matter of cold calls and walk ins to get said interviews?

Thanks.

Most places in Vietnam require that you have one (a CELTA). You wont have many decent options without one. I had taught in China for two years before I got mine, and I still found that it made me a better teacher, so it's still worth the investment.

If you do your CELTA here, you might get a job offer from your CELTA center, or at least have more time to shop around check out the local job market. Vietnam is a cheap place to get it done as well.

TESOL is probably more widely accepted in Vietnam than CELTA.
New rules coming- NO on line ESL certificates will be able to get a Work permit-only the ones with a significant :"in class" component.
That puts a few out in the cold.

Thanks for the advice
I quit my job and am going to Chiang Mai to get my Celta Jan-Feb, and will be looking to go to vietnam shortly after if I don't stay in Thailand.

Snolly~can you PM me the blog? I don't have enough postings on the non-korean forum Cool

So essentially, if I roll into HCMC with a bunch of CVs and am adorable enough, I just walk into schools and convince them I'm a decent hire?

Thanks for all the advice-You guys are amaaaazing!

That's what I thought, and I'd like to get one anyway, I was just curious if it was a requirement, as it appeared to be. I'll most likely get my CELTA in country and stick around to find work. Any places you recommend?

I just sent emails out, and sent one application via the company website. Got a positive reply from all but one company.

It's officially a requirement, yes. And if you don't have one, it limits your options, particularly at the bigger schools, who can't really avoid the authorities. So yeah, Apollo or ILA for your CELTA, basically. They're the same price, with a couple of different special offers, so it might just come down to the start date you want. I think ILA have more frequent start dates. That's where I did mine, and the tutors were pretty good (but they change each course).

This talk of one or the other being "more widely accepted in VN" is rubbish.

It's the same as everywhere.

120 hours minimum.
7 hours observed minimum

CELTA well known, TEFL International well know, and TESOL programs of all kinds.

Aside from the CELTA, which we all know what we're getting because it's the same standard, you have to research the background and training, and education of the individual trainers.

WHich is more likely to get you hired?

TEFL international at tefl course . org has accepted me without an interview or anything similar to an application, which makes me wary.

How do I know if I'm getting scammed or if I will actually get hired once I get there?

How important is "job placement included"?

does anyone know about cactus tefl? They include language courses and I'm incredibly interested in that.

I've applied to ILA vietnam but I'm still not sure if I should just go with an auto accepted TEFL course?

Please help!
