I currently live and teach at EF in Indonesia. For several reasons, I am considering trying out a new city, and I had thought of Hanoi (and had an offer from Washington English School there) before I went with this offer.
I realize these forums are not the final word on a school or a city; everyone has very different opinions and experiences.
I would like to know if anyone knows about these English schools in Hanoi: Washington English, Golden Key, English Hanoi
I can't fine a website per se for EF-Hanoi---I've heard they recently opened a branch there, but the EF site is for all the school, and it's hard to find out how to apply specifically for EF-Hanoi.
I am looking for a more cosmopolitan, international city than the one where I am currently living. I have heard all about the noise, traffic, etc. But is it a nice enough place to live? Easy to meet other ex-pats and are there decent bars, museums, galleries, etc?
Would love to hear what someone has to say, who isn't going to just complain and say only negative things!

The Washington school is ALWAYS hiring - but I've never met anyone who worked there. Hing.

I know about Washington, a little of Golden Key, and nothing of English Hanoi.

Websites are very mis-leading, anyway.

Come here first for a few days and try the city as a tourist.
Honestly, why haven't you tried the BIG schools? You mentioned small schools, that are always hiring, and that are not considered to be top-tier. |

Could you share what some of these bigger schools are? I have just started researching Hanoi---not easy to find a complete list of all the English schools in a particular city. I think I saw there are a few international schools in Hanoi, but they may be pretty competitive. The schools I mentioned are the ones I have come across on the internet. |

As far as a big city goes you might have better luck in Saigon. Larger population, culture, night life, expats and schools. At the end of the day it is all about what you are looking for.
Just Noel gave the best advice. Come as a tourist for a few days. I have a feeling both cities may rattle your nerves with all the stimuli. |

Agreed. Hanoi is far, far, far away from being cosmopolitan. Maybe in 100 years or so. |

Well stated, all - I would never refer to Ha Noi as vibrant or exciting or really even possessing an urban atmosphere!!
Especially when, the times I crave bars, nightlife and a cosmopolitan feeling, I have to fly down to Ho Chi Minh City..... |

Apollo- GE, TOEFL, Kids galore
Language Link- 3 locations- GE, Business, kids, Adults, teens
ACET- IELTS only- Good day time gig- 8-5- No Sat Sunday-no evenings
Cleverlearn- Kids kids kids-Weekends and evenings.
Golden Key? Crap. Here today gone tomorrow.
EF- There used to be one but I witnessed the owner Director assault a woman in the ladies toilets, and her business parther was taken away for embezzlement- Not a real EF school- EF was trying to get them to stop using the name.
Hanoi exciting? I hardly would use that word- Quiet, cuktured yes- Exciting? If you like knitting, maybe. |

That's strange because on the official EF website, there are locations listed in hanoi and HCMC. How do you know this information about Golden Key?
Perhaps cosmopolitan and exciting are not exactly what i meant. I live in Malang, East Java, Indonesia right now. While it's pretty clean and attractive and a city of about 1 million, believe me, Hanoi MUST be more exciting and interesting. There are NO BARS here. Indonesians hardly ever drink. Restaurants close at 10pm , almost all of them. You can count the "nightclubs" on a few fingers, and they suck. There are virtually no fun hangouts where expats can meet---and very few ex-pats
You're telling me Hanoi has no galleries/cafes/bars, a fairly large population of expats?? Malang has none of these things. I don't need clubs open all night--that's not my thing. But some culture, decent restaurants, ex-pat community, bars, museums and the like.

If you want to remain in Southeast Asia, then the only cities where you will be satisfied with your specific requirements are Singapore, KL, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, HCMC, Manila, and Jakarta.
(You can forget beach/resort places like Phuket because the competition for EFL jobs is quite fierce there -- not to mention the lack of "culture.") |
