I work in Japan but have some Chinese students.
I can deal with all but a couple. These two tend to complain and don't know when to shut up.
We have a strict attendence policy at our school. 11 absences are an automatic failure. Being late twice is the same as one absence.
Obviously they don't like it and think I am too strict.
It seems to me that these two students can't accept any criticism from teachers. I am guessing their sense of pride is too strong.
I think Japanese students have more manners in comparison.
Any thoughts on this? |

It's not clear which age group you are teaching. In general, Chinese students are quite well-mannered and respectful. Of course, your mileage may vary. A teacher may encounter the little emperors, who have received everything on a silver platter so far in life. In such a case, a teacher cannot be too strict, in my opinion. |

I work at a university.
In the International Relations major, English is required for two years. Some students complain about that, but that is too bad.
I do know they prefer to learn Japanese, but English is required.
Yes, these two students are probably spoiled. |

Just trying to figure it out. I have had good Chinese students. And these students were about the best students at our school.
In general in Japan, students get worse year by year, regardless of their background.
Well, as it is I only can fail lazy people like this. Last year`s Chinese students were just better. |

As youve noticed not all Chinese students are diligent and hard-working. I dont think you can do much in isolation, it depends on what support your school will give you and what classroom management style you have. If youve tried talking to them and they dont want to listen to laowai, then your school should take action. |

If they are being disruptive in class, throw them out. Don't let a couple whiners get in the way of educating those students who want to learn. |

Being in Japan they are probably not poor and were given everything they ever wanted all their life.
Chalk it up to their parents and the upbringing they received. |

Can't kick them out. It is the school policy.
I don't think it is a foreign thing. One teacher is popular since he knows Chinese and he is American.
Obviously, Chinese that can study in Japan aren't poor. Yes, just have a couple spoiled ones. Just have to fail them.
I am used to teaching Japanese people. I have worked in Tokyo for over ten years. I am not used to any complaining in class. Japanese just almost never act that like in the classroom. At least they know it is not good to do. Some Chinese have no sense of tact and don't know when to shut up.
My wife had a problem when she worked in Osaka. She had to teach an English class for Chinese students who wanted to go to Japanese universities.
They had to pass the English part of the entrance exam.
Their problem was that their English wasn't good enough, and they complained about English saying that they came to Japan to learn Japanese, not English. They couldn't admit that they sucked at English and had to try harder. |

I have spent a number of years teaching mainland Chinese students in china and outside china. In general, those that leave the country to study overseas are rich but not academically gifted. They also seem to suffer hugeculture shock. Chinese students in china are comfortable within their system and act accordingly. |

I think the problem is not so much with your students as it is with your school policy. I rarely kick students out of my class but it is nice to have that option so students know I am serious. Once you play that card, the students know you mean business and most likely, your problem will be solved. If it were me, I would have a long talk with the administration....or find another school. I would never tolerate working at a school where students are allowed to disrupt the class without fear of retribution. |
