Anyone got any opinions on Online TEFL certificates?
I had a quick look at this one http://www.onlinetefl.com and it looks pretty useful, not too hard, and is very reasonably priced compared to the Celta. Obviously it wont give me as much, but as a basis for English teaching and as an employabiltity tool for the Chinese market how useful is it?
What other alternatives are there to the Celta as if its costing me 995 UK pounds then I have to start saving up and its going to be debatable if I have enough time before the end of the summer (and start of the september semester) to do this and to find a job and save up for my flight! |

IBEH, the Celta is quite expensive, it's true. But it is better value than most other certs, especially an online one. Working onl-ine is just not going to get you ready you for real-time in-class on the ground, back-against-the-wall, thinking-on-your-feet, preparation-confident teaching. I dont really see how it could, which makes me think you would just be wasting your money. Now that would be expensive.
You can get affordable Celtas in Cairo, Bangkok, and Hanoi--according to posts on Dave's. (And in London there are comparable courses like the Trinity.) There are probably other places too, not sure.
Not the answer you wanted, I guess. sorry, mate. Now, I must get back to my psych textbook...

oh dont worry i was preparing myself for the neccessity of the Celta course anyway so if theres no point doing an online course instead, no harm done! I suppose on the plus side this is one occupation where my experience of teaching children to read will finally come in handy |

Personally, I found most of the theory from my 4-week TEFL certificate to either be information I already knew or simply "common sense". By far the most valuable part of the course was the teaching experience component.
If a TEFL certificate course doesn't involve standing in front of a class and trying to teach, then I wouldn't recommend it.
(That said, I know that a lot of schools in Asia are so desperate that they are hiring native speakers with no training of any kind... so as an employability tool it will help you find work...)

From my job-scouting I would say that many potential employers don't have too high an opinion of an on-line cert. I did the CELTA in Seville as Amsterdam would have wiped me out - Cairo was also cheap, but I didn't fancy working in Egypt then.
Instead of doing anything online, save your money for the CELTA - it will always be a good recognised training. Should you really want to do something now, just buy some good teaching theory or activity books and a basic grammar exercise book, studying those will get you quite far. Can you ask a local school if you can sit in on ESL classes?
