Thought I would go to the UAE for Xmas seeing as Oman has from the 23rd till the 31st off. Can anyone recommend cheap digs? A furnished apartment or such? Websites I have seen to date don't reflect an oversupply of housing Confused

"Cheap" and "housing" or "hotels" are words that don't go together in the UAE. One of the best buys we found were the Club/Executive Rooms at the Metropolitan Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Rd - http://metropolitandubai.habtoorhotels.com/site/general/Default.aspx

Free breakfast, juice, snacks...free open bar happy hour with appetizers in the evening. There are several restaurants on site. It's convenient to Dubai Maill, Mall of the Emirates, and Jumeira Beach.

Hotels: Novotel (World Trade Centre) and Ibis (next to Mall of the Emirates) are excellent value.

Furnished (hotel) apartments: I think that if you're in a group of 4 or 5, the cheapest and best-value accommodation in Dubai are hotel apartments. AED700-1000 per night is very good for that town, especially divided by 4 or 5. You could get a one-bedroom for about AED400 or 500. Try Golden Sands (I like 10) and Desert Rose: both in Mankhool/Bur Dubai and near the Burjuman Centre. Smile

Al Ain - there's some inexpensive places at the foot of the mountain (green something) --- Been there and loved it.

Continuing into Oman - I'd recommend crashing in Nizwa.

Just don't tell your Emirati friends you're going there (alledgedly black magic in the area).

No... it is Bahla that is famous for that... Cool My Omani students always warned me - seriously - about going there because there was a teacher who was turned into a watermelon. (never learned if s/he got changed back)
