Hi, I have just graduated and received my TESOL Certificate about a month ago; and now I want to travel to Mexico (most likely Guadalajara) in the New Year and look for work there. I have no experience, but when is a good time to go, when the schools will be looking to staff? I understand that the school year starts in September, just as it does in the rest of North America. But is there a semester for some language schools during the summer, that would start in like June or May? How much money should I have when I leave because I will be unemployed for a time before I can acquire a job? It is a little nerve-wracking to be in a foreign country with no job while looking for work, so I want to make sure that I have enough money to subsist on for at least a month or two. If anyone could give me some advice on this I'd really appreciate it.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. You may want to send a pm to gregd75. He runs a private language school in GDL that may require people with your aspirations and background. He could also probably give you tips about the city as well.

Good luck!

Hello!

Thankyou very much for thinking about me, the peanut gallery, but I covered my vacancies at the beginning of December!

My advice would be to come well prepared- I received over 80 applications for the positions I had and the competition is very tough indeed.

January could be a good time to come to GDL. As it has been said many times before on the forum- getting a job is very often a case of being at the right place at the right time.

I'd also suggest joining MEXTESOL. We'll have an event on 12th February and its a very good opportunity to meet other teacehrs and network.

Good luck for finding something!

What would be your advice on 'coming prepared'? I have all of my vaccinations, and I have had my TESOL Certificate apostilled. I certainly have a passport. Is there anything else that I should do before I go that is of fundamental significance? Thank you for helping me on this. Also, as an employer, would you expect to see an applicant's university degree? Should I bring mine, and have it apostilled like my TESOL Certificate? Thanks!

Im not Greg, but I do some hiring and I would ask to see your university degree, even if its not related. It could give you an edge over a person with no degree, but I would want to see it, and, yes, apostilled. If you got any written evaluations of teaching practices, I would bring those, a good resume, anything you thing might make you stand above the crowd. Some places wont ask to see anything, or just your TESOL certificate, but better employers will. Also, I ask people I am going to interview to prepare a 10 or 15 minute mini-lesson to present at the interview to get an idea of their teaching style, so you might want to do that. Just out of curiosity, what vacinations were you told you needed to come to Mexico?

The last time I needed a vaccination to come to Mexico was in 1966 when I needed to get a new smallpox vaccination.

Wow, why so many different kinds of shots? After all, it's not like Mexico is an extremely unhealthy country just teeming with diseases. By the way, I didn't know you could get a shot for turista.

Most likely the result of a greedy gringo doctor playing on the fears of someone going to Mexico for the first time. When was the last time you heard of someone getting polio in Mexico? Rolling Eyes

I think the OP might have been listing all vaccines ever received, as MM&R and polio are usually given to infants or so I've heard...

I know that I got most of those again when I went into the US Army, so I guess a second-round doesn't hurt and I think it's almost time for a tetanus booster again.

BTW where can I get vaccines in the DF? Would IMSS hook a Gringo up? Or should I swing by the Cruz Roja Mexicana in Polanco?

There are numerous reasons why, and each individual's needs are different. Likely, the OP had consulted a medical professional before hand.
Experienced travellers all know that many vaccinations require boosters.

Confused I'm wondering if the poster ever leaves their apartment.

Good for you newbie86. And for others who intend to travel and/or work outside Mexico Citys idyllic (or is it acrylic) dome-of-good-health, a quick look on the net or better yet a trip to your local travel health clinic for the most up-to-date information is definitely a good idea. Just one example is this site http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/mamerica_carib/mexico.php

This doesnt surprise me, given your immunization history is 45 years out of date.

Regards,

I love the DL post...pure drive-by, outta nowhere. Wink

I didn't know there was a turista shot either. Given the large number of things that cause turista, I'd be surprised that they came up with something to cover them all. Do you have this shot DL? What's it called?

I'm behind on my shots...tetanus I think is the most needed dealing with all the rusty barbs around here. Wink

I humbly apologize for whatever I have done to tick off, Dragon Lady. And how did she know that I am a recluse who never leaves her apartment? Wink

This is the advertisement I see most often. I love the artist's interpretation. http://www.travellersdiarrhea.com/Home.cfm?CFID=2855570&CFTOKEN=24903398
No, I don't (been here too long), but the kids all got one before their visit at Christmas, along with an arm's length list of other vaccinations including those mentioned by the other poster. Most were boosters, but some were for special concerns (#3 son's fiancee has kidney disease)

Mine are as well. The last time I really had everything up to date was when I worked in Nepal. BTW Polio was a small concern when I was in Chiapas - from what I can find now on the internet the issue is(was?) with the indigenous population - although the last reported cases were some 15-16? years ago, it's very difficult to trace/confirm eradication of this disease due to the remoteness of many of their communities.
