Hey!

So, I have been in a Leopalace for the last year, as has my partner. We are both non-Japanese and work for the same company. However, the company has expressed that they would not feel comfortable finding a shared apartment for us, in case our relationship ends and one of us wants to move out.

We are both hoping to live vaguely near Kyoto (or at least in Shiga-ken), ideally in the same apartment for maximum money-saving opportunities. After a year in a Leopalace, I think we definitely need something bigger. I know that setting up a new place is expensive, and particularly difficult for foreigners with low Japanese ability. I was wondering if anybody had any advise? Firstly, is it possible for two non married, non-Japanese people to co-habit in Japan? How difficult do you think it will be to find somewhere? Also, any recommendations for companies etc?

Thank you!!!

If you know the area you want to live, ask a Japanese friend or coworker to help you apartment hunt. Head off to all the different agencies serving that area.

Figure out a price range you can afford and what you're looking for.
Keep in mind that some agencies may flat out reject you. Also, a lot of the home owners may be against foreigners, so you could have slim picking.

All depends on the area.

Yes, it's possible.

Yes, it will be expensive. Most apartments are unfurnished, including no appliances of any kind, no curtains, no light fixtures, etc. 100-yen shops don't offer these.
