I was just in KL for a long shopping weekend and spent some down time perusing the want ads, jobs and apartments.
I don't know the specifics of your job offer, but RM5,800 would be a decent offer for someone in TESL/TEFL and with a bachelors degree.
Of course the British Council and international schools pay higher, but those jobs are limited in number.
For rent, link houses go for RM1,000-2,500 depending upon location, and apartments RM800-2,000. Of course, in the expat ghettos, one can pay up to RM15k per month for a condo.
Give me a PM with your specific location, and I can give you a better idea of rentals. |

The BC jobs are closer to RM 10,000. How many hours would you be working, and in what area? Cost of living can vary there, but I'd say that sounds like it's on the low side. |

You should also check out the discussion in this thread regarding KL, if you haven't already done so.

To get RM 10k you need a Delta and to be a fair way up their salary point scale.
Starting rate for CELTA/TESOL + 2 years experience is RM8465.
I see you get taxed on that though. Anyone know what sort of tax you'd pay in the RM 9k range?
Thanks |

I calculate my taxes online through the LHDN website so I don't have the latest year's tax table, but I do have the one for the 2006 tax year. For a salary over RM100,001 (RM8465 x 12), the rate was 27% in that year. Of course, deductions could have brought that down into the RM70k-100k range which had a 24% rate. The highest rate that year was 28%, for those over RM250k.
How many TESL/TEFL teachers does the BC hire each year in Malaysia? |

Thanks...
Not exactly sure as to the number per year. I know there's an ad up now (deadline 26th) for 2 teachers. I think I saw one in Nov too, but not sure if those were the same jobs. There was an ad back in May for three posts, but before that I don't know. |
