To those of you who sent me PM's about the "w h o r e" post, thank you ever so much for taking the time to express your concerns and alert me to the problem.

To those who posted comments on the efficiency of the moderators, I'd also like to thank you for your kind words and support.

In response to the outporing of concern over the fact that the "w h o r e" post was allowed to remain on this forum for several hours before it was removed (and the poster forever banished) I have decided to post my home phone number - 909-555-1212. Please, do feel free to call me at any time of the day or night to alert me to any post that requires immediate attention and don't worry for even one second that it might disturb me or my infant son when we are fast asleep on the other side of the world.

Oh, and please, do feel free to call collect.

What concerns me is that people should post really nasty stuff like this in the first place. I remember a few months back when the old forum was unmoderated for a few hours. Obscenities, personal attacks and more. Proof to me that the world of EFL has a fair share of freaks. But the post that Paul was referring to was probably not from a teacher. Something about the syntax - but maybe the poster wanted to disguise who he was !

Dear Paul G,
Hey, to err is human, to forgive, divine. So, naturally I forgive you. It was a particularly nasty post, though, and I'm sure that the people whose reputations were being besmirched by it are glad to see it's gone. But Paul, is that really, really, your phone number? If so, I guess you must live in Hollywood and your life is actually a movie. Being a moderator's a dirty job, but heck, somebody's got to do it.
Thanks,
John
P.S. In the Marines, whenever we asked the Sarge to " cut us some slack ", the inevitable reply was: " The slack machine is broken ".

Dear scot47,
Or perhaps it really WAS a teacher, who deliberately made all those errors so as to make people think it WASN'T a teacher. Or perhaps I've been reading too many mystery novels. Ah well, bozos, as usual, abound.
Regards,
John

Dear Paul.
Can we have a "banned posts" forum where all the myriad posts that offend one or other of the moderator's sensibilities could live on for the delectation of the shameless amongst us.

Of course, after the viewing statistics show that no one reads it then you could delete the forum :)

What a wonderful idea! We could put it right next to the "Dumb Questions" forum. Razz

Listen, Stephen, the only thing that really ever offends me is when people who are totally unqualified to teach come on these forums and ask about how they can get a job teaching and then try to justify their right to teach with no regard for the students.....and those posts are allowed to stay because what offends me personally has nothing to do with the criterea for what gets deleted.

This is a "G" rated web site. If certain material/language were allowed to be posted that status would change and then the site would require warnings that it contains adult content etc., etc. It's not worth the hassle.

We try to keep the forums civilized. Things like the "w h o r e" post are just so far out of line that they have no place here. It wasn't the language in the post, it was the fact that some clown was trying to start bad rumors about a teacher's wife among people who might know that teacher. If it were your wife/girlfriend/mother that were the brunt of such a malicious attempt, I doubt that you would want the post to remain, segregated or not, for the vicarious enjoyment of others.
