Taken from another forum MOD EDIT
Dear all,

We are closing in on the end of the year and we would like to thank our customers & partners for a great 2010. Being an expatriate in Vietnam has not gotten less confusing, but hopefully we at Expat.vn have helped the lucky ones who have contacted us.

Quick updates:

1. Regarding visas, work permits and temporary residence card; it is getting simpler again. Ex. 6 months visas are now easily available.

2. Regarding company set-ups; 100% foreign owned companies now need a larger fund, for example: 100,000 USD for export/import businesses compared to previously when there was no requirement at all.

Latest pricing:

1. 1-3 months new visa: $45 - $135
2. 1-3 months visa extension: $45 - $90
3. 6 months visa on arrival: available for expatriates from USA, Canada, Europe, Japan under 55 years of age: $110
4. 3 years temporary residence card for anyone who has a work permit: $300
5. 2 years temporary residence card for anyone who has a foreign/JSC company (3+ billion dongs fund) to be their sponsor: $1,100/ card

For anyone who wish to receive the criminal record application form, work permit application forms, and for any further information, please feel free to contact us at hello[at]expat.vn.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I can only comment on the work permits. Simpler? No.

The big question (again and again) is who has possession/ownership of the WP. Nobody knows; nobody agrees.

Therefore, I refuse to get one.

Apparently....certain nationalities can get a letter that provides a 6 month visa on arrival. You have to fly out of the VN, and fly back in. You cannot go over-land.

As usual, this is subject to change, so keep checking and asking.

I asked- result here

MOD EDIT

I think the police certificate you are asking is called "Criminal record", you can get this record at the Judicial Department of the city you are staying in Vietnam. This criminal record is to say that during your stay in Vietnam whether you have any "mark" or you have not done anything wrong in Vietnam.
MOD EDIT, we could help to get you the criminal record.

From what I know, you will need to get that criminal record translated into English and then certified by Foreign Affair department in the city you stay in Vietnam. We would like to offer the price if you are in Ho Chi Minh city.

Our fee to get the criminal record in Vietnamese: $80.

Our fee to get the criminal record in English and certify by the Foreign affair department: $180.

Turn around time: 5 weeks to 6 weeks.

We also would like to inform that you will need to join us for some meetings when we process these documents because they will need your presence there.

Please let me know if you have any concerns.

Thanks.[/i]

I asked about (from another source-HR dept of a large Language school) how about the police check that goes with the work permit- I was told that it is supposed to be fine for this purpose. It costs next to nothing, does not require any personal meetings, and is issued by your local Police Office. I guess if its good enough for getting a Work permit, it must be OK to use as a Police record too. Hope so.

Just paid $35 market rate for a 3mo/single renewal. Maybe I have a nice surprise coming when I go to get my passport back?

Not planning on leaving the country in the next 3 mo, so it made sense for me. It was $95 for multiple entry. They said something about getting something at the border for $15 with the single entry, but I'm not sure about it.

I know that, IN THE PAST, renewing visas for three months whilst remaining IN-country would set you back $160 to $220 in the North....SOMEWHAT cheaper in Da Nang......

I'll be flying out and back soon - I will post here IF this rumour is indeed true that they ARE now returning to issuing 6-month visas again (at least for Visa On Arrival).

God, I hope so....would make life soooooo much less of a headache for me.
