So, how many of you EFL educators that work for one of the wonderful laguage schools or universities here in beautiful Mexico City got a year end bonus??
Any school OWNERS? Do you give a Christmas bonus to your hard working teachers? I say EFL educators because we aren't really seen as real teachers by professors in the United States. |

I doubt that many English teachers in Mexico are given what they are entitled to under Mexican law.
As long as foreigners that own/run schools continue to screw over foreign newbies and use the excuse of "That's just how things are done in Mexico" nothing will change. And as long as there are people willing to work for peanuts and continue the charade, as long as there is a fresh supply of native-speakers, there will be no changes.
Ironic how foreigners come to Mexico, set-up shop as a "school" owner and then proceed to blatantly violate Mexican law and use immoral (and often illegal) methods to withhold pay and benefits to teachers. I wonder how many, if any, of said "owners/directors" would pull the same stunt back home in the US, Canada, UK etc? Not many, if any, I bet. because they know they would be in some very hot water, very quickly, but in Mexico, EFL teachers, both foreign and Mexican seem used to getting shafted by their employers, both foreign and Mexican. |

Again, with things being different in different parts of the country. There really aren't any foreign owners here and I have sure never worked for one. A Canadian recently took a stab at it with his Mexican wife, but the economy put them out of business rather quickly. They were more focussed on teaching Spanish.
Did you work for a foreigner in DF? Use of immoral methods?? I guess I have a very dull life here by comparison to some of you living in the big city! |

No, I think its just them. I live in the big city, and I have yet to meet any of those owners. I have always gotten my pay, my aguinaldo when I was entitled to one, even IMSS, which I didnt even want. Its kind of amazing that in 20 years I havent had the problems that those two seem to have had in just a couple of years. |

I really hope the New Year turns things around for all those unemployed. That goes for Mexico, USA, Canada, Britain, etc. By the same token, I find it's rather strange that when one finds themselves in such circumstances, that suddenly everything and everyone else in the entire city or even nation, for that matter, is to blame. Painting an entire country of people, schools, teachers, students as horrid seems to be a strange solution to the problem at hand. I came to Mexico with no unrealistic expectations, or sense of entitlement. Maybe that's the difference in outlooks. |

Yes, so do I. I imagine it is a rather desperate feeling. And things are bad all over. I am currently in the US, in Milwaukee, and I am amazed at the differences in just a year, lots of businesses closed that were here for many years, a friend was just laid off a job hes had for 15 years with no notice, everywhere I go people are asking for charitable donations - even in stores, I cant remember ever seeing it quite so bad. So lets hope the new year brings changes for everyone, everywhere. |

Them?? You mean Prof. Gringo and his response. I have revenue coming in from sources other than EFL teaching (like you Teresa) and access to money, NOT pesos. I'm not working obviously because it's December but I have some things lined up for January.
So you see, I'm not in a terrible economic situation Teresa. Please don't say that I am. Prof. Grngo goes to the States for three or four months and makes more than most EFL teachers will make in two years, so I think it's safe to say that he's not close to being homeless either. We don't say what we say about Mexico because we're broke, we say what we say because we want newbies to have a more balanced picture and because we don't use daves as a recruiting tool.
I have nada against Mexico, I just point out the bad as well as the good.
Merry Christmas to you and yours Teresa. Without you, Samantha, Guy and Greg, daves would be a boring place. |

As I just mentioned to Teresa Sam, I'm not hurting because I have access to money and I also have another source of income. Prof. Gringo does well to when he goes to the States for a couple of months. So you see, we aren't in bad moods, we just like to point out the good and the bad.
Here's a Holiday present for you Sam...something good about Mexico...Atoli (did I spell that right?) |

What are both of you talking about?
My post had nothing to do with my economic situation. |

That's what I was trying to explain. They keep saying you and I are going through an economic rough patch so we're always angry. Something to that effect. Not true of course. |

Definitely a candidate for "most corrupt school in SLP" nowadays. |

It's even worse than before? I didn't think that was possible
Enchilada should get some kinda reward for sticking it out in SLP.
I saw a bunch of poorly run language schools that advertise for gullible newbies with either little TEFL experience or no experience of Mexico. They use and abuse EFL teachers and will throw you to the curb the first time you decide to speak up for your rights.
Like most rural/smaller city language schools in Mexico, the ones in SLP are worse than a total joke. Just another example of how language schools are part of the problem and not any solution in Mexico. |

Be careful newbies. Not everyone who APPEAR or SOUND like they have your best interest in mind really do. |
