Hello! I have a masters degree in ESL education, a teaching license in MN, and three years of experience teaching in a public school in MN. I'm wondering how easy/hard it will be to find a job if I just show up somewhere and start looking around once I get there. What types of jobs can I expect to find with those qualifications...language institutes, international schools, university jobs? How long of a commitment do the different types of schools typically expect? I would like to stay for a year. Is that realistic or do most schools expect a longer commitment?

Any recommendations of countries where it will be easier to find a job and countries that pay higher salaries? I am willing to live frugally but I don't want to be loosing money.

Also, if I go in july or august will I be able to find a job that time of year?

If you want a GOOD job, then don't show up and look around. With your quals, you could get a job at an intl school.

Look at www.ibo.org and www.tes.co.uk

If you show up and look around, yopu'll make $700 a month, if that. Intl shcols pay $3000 and up, plus benefits, For intl schools, the UAE, Brunei, and third world countries are good since salaries are high and cost of living is low. One year is ok, most prefer two though.

It's hard to get work visas, especially if you just show up and look around. Uni jobs are usually taken by those with spousal visas, so intl schools seem like your best route.

If you don't want to get into intl schools, then look at Korea and the Middle East.

July or August is ok, language institutes high year round. BUt like I said, intl schols would be better for you.

Here's a spot to look at international schools...with your quals and if you can commit to a year or more, these will be the best jobs as Natureg says.

You can do better with these jobs trying to contact them directly by email or telephone, and if need be yes, just by showing up. for the time of year you're looking at, Mexico and Central America (of Latin America) are best with the school year starting in line with North America. Most of South America starts in early March.

Will international schools hire me just from contacting them via email or phone? I've heard that most of them won't hire people that aren't already in the country unless its through a job fair. So is it possible to get hired from here in the US with out going to the job fairs?

Sorry, I didn't mean to leave the impression that you could be hired directly by phone or email...just that you can make contact easily. From there, yes a hire from a job fair or being in country is what works, in my experience anyway.
