Hello everyone,

I just finished the CELTA at one of the big schools and wanted to share a few details for the up-and-comers out there...

First, I won't be talking about the CELTA course itself here. I may offer some insights later, but I'm just not in the mood right now...

I will say this- you've heard right...it is NOT easy. But it's doable and if you stick it out and do the coursework, you WILL pass. Trust me, they don't want you to fail. They just want you to learn and put in the effort.

Now for the good stuff...

Started with 18, "graduated" (for lack of a better term) 17. 1 guy dropped out after the first week because he just didn't feel like doing the work. Everyone else passed.

Jobs...can't say what the final numbers will be here as they are interviewing this week and I'm not in-country anymore. What I can tell you is this...

My class had about 10 people who are staying on and looking for work. All who wanted an interview will get one. This particular school is looking to hire 7-8 part-timers immiediately to get them through the holidays. Full-time positions will become available after Tet (or so we were told.) Plenty of work for part-timers in December. January will be rough.

Pay (for the part-time positions) was presented as $17.20 USD per hour. If you were a Pass-B then $17.45.

Out of the 17 in my class we had 1 "A" that I know of and probably 4-5 "B's". I wasn't one of them.

Experienced teachers ended-up doing better in the course at the end but had a much more difficult time up-front adjusting to a new teaching style.

Some guy on an earlier post said the CELTA was "academic" but that is hardley true. It's focused 100% on practical application. They expect you to know the grammar already. If you don't, then fake it. The students already know more grammar than you anyway. They just can't use it in the form of speech, wich is where you and your CELTA training come in.

Hope this helps. If you would like to know more, please let me know.

Go to the ILA Vietnam sticky to see why YOU SHOULD NOT DO THE CELTA AT ILA.
