Hello everyone.
I always find these forums helpful, so I was hoping for some advice.
I have a PGDE (English and Drama), a TESOL certificate and six years ESL teaching experience from a private high school in Japan where I was the head NET. I also taught young kids in my spare time while I was there.
I interviewed with the PNET program in August in Australia and was accepted but now have to wait for a job offer. If I get one, that is. In the meantime, I have applied for jobs with ESF and a few of the international schools that were advertising for the next school year.
I am wondering what the chances are of being placed as a NET or getting a job at ESF or the international schools this year. My situation is a little back to front as I finished my PGDE last year after teaching in Japan for six years.
Do ESF/international schools prefer teaching experience in your home country for a few years first or do you think they will accept the teaching experience I had in Japan as well as the practicum/ internship I did in Australia?
I know Hong Kong is competitive and a lot of it is a waiting game, but I just would like to know if I am on the right track here.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot for your time in advance. |

I guess it really depends what you want to do.
ESF: Would be like teaching LI in your home country.
NET: Would be like teaching L2 in Japan.
I have been a NET in HK for 12 years. Although the thought of moving back to the western world (or ESF) seems attractive (at times), the thought of working in L1 and the responsibilities that come with it have kept me in Hong Kong.
Move to Hong Kong and you will get a post sooner or later. |

Thanks for the advice.
So the qualifications and experience I have is what Hong Kong is looking for?
Its hard to know sometimes.
I like L2 teaching to be honest but I thought I read on one of the discussion threads that there would be very few new PNET positions this year as they would be filled by those already on the program.
Is this true? |

PGDE + recognized TESOL cert + experience ? This may be why you passed the interview stage for the NET scheme.
now you wait.
and wait.
Get all of your documentation in order. |

It's quite possible you won't hear from a NET school until the summer - as SF suggests, the wait is often a long one.
Re. your teaching experience being prior to your PGDE, I imagine it will certainly help with your application, but it won't be counted towards your NET salary if you get appointed - only post-qual experience gives increments. Not sure about ESF.
Good luck. |

Thanks so much everyone.
I can't believe they won't count pre -qualification experience. Oh well. |
