Are there job opportunites for editing or writing in English in Mexico? I have already been in contact with The News, the English-language newspaper in Mexico City. Do you know about any other places that hire people to edit or write in English? Thanks!

In the internet age, there's no reason why clients buying your writing or your editing services have to be in the same country.

The News could sure use an editor, it is full of mistakes! I use it with my classes so we can correct the English and find the spelling errors. I am not sure how much actual writing goes on, the seem to mostly translate local news from the Spanish language papers, and use wire services. You might contact travel agencies to see if they need any materials written in English.

notamiss: Indeed. I'm guessing that if I manage to get any editing/writing work while I'm in Mexico, most of it will be offsite freelance work. I've got my Guru.com profile set up.

Teresa: Sadly, more and more mistakes are popping up in all sorts of newspapers, magazines, books, etc., all over the world. It's mainly because of cutbacks. I'm less worried about spelling errors and more worried about factual errors. BTW, good idea about contacting travel agencies.

You might try getting in touch with these two bloggers, the first being an American author and journalist living and writing in Mexico City and the second a British teacher and writer also in DF who once worked for the News here.

Both are approachable types that might be able to offer some pointers.

The best jobs are never advertised. This is especially true in Mexico. I've found these kind of jobs, but only by word of mouth/networking.

That's how I've found translating work too, through recommendations of fellow translators or through other connections, both personal and professional.

Yep, I totally agree about how to get the best jobs. It's all about networking and connections. And researching where you want to work and targeting those places, regardless of whether they have an advertised vacancy.
