For the attention of members:

MUST is offering MOP18000/month for almost 40 hours a week.MOP1000 for rent and THAT'S IT.No flight tickets or bonuses.

The salary range on their site looks pretty impressive but in reality....LOL

Fairly standard local terms then. What is misleading is that they give the annual salary instead of the monthly one on the web page about job vacancies. Having seen something of the incredible mish-mash of cultures and experience on their staff, it doesn't surprise me.

I don't know where you are now, but I can tell you that "work practices" in Macau are a whole lot more laid back than those in Hong Kong or the privately run places I've seen on the mainland, so I seriously doubt that it would be "nearly 40" contact hours!

Dunno about junior staff, but just last week visited the home of a very senior member of MUST academic staff - it would probably be about MOP15k per month on the open market, if that's worth anything for comparison.

39 hours=16 teaching hours+office hours

On the so called salary,7%-12% tax.

I think this is pathetic considering the fact that they want teachers to hold Masters/CELTA/DELTA.

Horses for courses. You can live very nicely in Macau on that money - Hong Kong it ain't, and rents are considerably lower than in the larger mainland cities.

The place is just emerging from being Stanley Ho Hung Sun's private fiefdom (flying a Portuguese flag of convenience) - even compulsory elementary education was only introduced in Macau 12 years ago. Internet service is totally pathetic (a quango monopoly), the bureaucracy is a nightmare compared with mainland, and you don't even want to hear about the Judiciary Police and the courts.

If you want to live in a big city with efficiencies of scale, this is NOT the place. But if you're not careful, it grows on you.

beg to differ there.for a married couple,it is impossible to live on that money.i guess a chunk of it will go towards rent and utilities.actually they want slaves not teachers.

Well, obviously it depends on the standard of living you expect.
Yes, electricity and internet are expensive.
But most local families I know here manage to do more than just *survive* on <15K a month - and they are in private housing not government-subsidised.

If you're already here, and have established what you need to live a lifestyle you're comfortable with, then I've no argument with that.

It's just that to say that "it's impossible" for a couple to live on 18k is blatantly untrue. 15k is already pretty comfortable for a couple by my standards - OK, I avoid Cotai like the plague and am happy to use public pools & gyms, but I'm no ascetic!

From what I've seen - admittedly well short of everything - there are enough well-qualified people available to work for that amount, including the "trailing spouses" of expats who work for other companies here. What I frankly don't know is whether the university has the nous to employ the best applicants... (me? cynical about selection procedures / corruption in Macau? hahahahaha!)

Thank you for the input.

Now please decipher how can a couple live on 18k minus taxes a month?

Rent?
Daily expenditure/monthly expenditure?
Internet,water and electricity?
Savings?

Probably you mean that one can live if he sticks to the basics.

Rent / management fees: MOP4500 (on the peninsula, not Taipa)
Transport: ca MOP300, using Macau card, and assuming at least one person makes a return trip to Taipa daily. Add a hundred or two more for taxi fares if feeling extravagant.
Utilities, including the dreaded CTM internet connection, drinking water, and using gas cylinders for cooking & hot water: MOP1500 per month allows plenty for aircon in summer.
Housekeeping, including eating in: MOP3000, add another K if you can't live without cheese & imported cereals. I'd probably use the extra for eating out instead.

Even after tax, that leaves plenty over for incidentals & saving. OK, my friends - both local & expat - normally buy clothes from factory outlets or have them made by local dressmakers or tailors, go to Ka Nin Wa rather than the Lisboa for dim sum, and use the same mobile phone until it wears out (or gets pickpocketed in Gongbei old market).
And I will admit that if your trying to pay off an Australian HECS debt or European equivalent, then the current exchange rates would probably leave you short. But I'm a generation past that, so confess to not having included it in my. budget.
