I've received "employment packages" from a public uni and another from a middle/high school (Zheijang Jiaxing Foreign Language School). Each employer will not call me internationally or use Skype. I got both of them through recruiters.

Normally, the employer calls the foreigner in these situations. So, it's odd to have it otherwise.

Is this a bad sign? Seems strange that a school would skimp on making a phone call. Hell, the uni didn't even schedule a specific interview time. The recruiter told me on their behalf to call a person's cell by Tuesday because they'll stop recruiting then. Doesn't seem very professional.

The other one at least scheduled a time for it.

Depends on the job. If you're blindly applying for anything and everything then I wouldn't bother calling them (Although i've never done this). If it's a job that I actually WANT somewhere that I want to be, I will treat it just as I would back home. For the job i'm at now, I showed up in person and had a discussion with the dean. Later on I called back to see how everything was being processed and kept a good line of communication with them.

What's the worst that will happen if you call them? They say no. So why not put in a little effort on your side to try to get the job? We do it on our own countries. I like to think that schools would hire someone who shows the school they WANT the job. But I do tend to live in my own little fantasy worlds. Even if the other side isn't professional it's still the best idea for you to be professional.

I don't agree with you at all. If they are giving you such shoddy treatment now, do you thnk they will have a change of heart once you start working for them? I think the OP's gut instincts are correct. I would avoid the schools as well as their recruiters.

The employer is the massa and you are the house N. This phone call is the first step in helping you understand your place in china.

You are calling because "it is you that is interested in the job, not the other way around."

I can't see what the problem is. I had to ring my University and speak to the Director of Foreign Affairs. Had a fixed time and got through to her immediately. Three hours later I had an email confirming that I had the job. Sorted.

That's not what I mean. If you walk into a school going "HAY I"M WHITE GIMME JOB NAO!" then well........that's not going to give off a good impression. guanxi goes a long way and while it might not change your employers attitude, doing things in the appropriate way goes a long way for your guanxi rather than if you fuss and fight and throw 10 year old girl temper tantrums. It's nothing to do with your employer, it's protecting yourself imo.

So what's the consensus? Do I call the university in Hangzhou and the middle school? Or is it the first step in a bad direction?
