I've been looking for a university position and had several interviews set up. However, they are being canceled because schools are starting to go on winter vacation.
Will I be able to get a uni job for this coming semester? Or am I screwed? |

it's true that most uni staff are not at their jobs now, but that doesnt mean they're all not working. Some FAOs will be busy doing some other kind of admin duties right now so some may still be at their office or reachable by phone part of the time.
its a certainty that some teachers wont return after the winter holiday for whatever reason. keep sending emails and keep calling the numbers of any uni FAOs you might have. you might get lucky and find one that needs a replacement asap. |

My take is that unis that are sure they will go into the spring semester with a full complement of FTs simply won't respond to enquiries. Concepts like PR or sizing up a bit of shelf stock for future recruiting ie August just doesn't occur to Chinese.
There may be a brief flurry of activity in a month or so, when unis become aware that a teacher they thought was returning isn't/hasn't - for whatever reason.
Another issue is that if you are hired for Spring start they will still want a year committment from you.
This means your cycle is out of kilter with the main hiring sequence.
But, as has been stated on this site countless times, in China there will always be exceptions. |

My school just hired a new guy a few days ago. I think it's difficult though, it probably all depends on how desperate the school is. Keep calling, keep trying and you'll get something. |

I start my position in March... I had originally applied for the job in December, but the processing of the visa requirements is taking a wee bit of time. I had initially been looking for work starting in Feb/March. And there is plenty out there. Just be patient. Go get your medical test done to speed things up, therefore when a school decides to hire you, the process is mostly left to them. |

I guess my school is one of the exceptions. I have signed a one term contract so that in the fall I can start all over at a new school, if I so desire. I wonder if the OP is in China now. If so, you might just want to camp out in the city you would like to teach in and then start calling schools as soon as the semester begins. At almost every school I have taught at, there is at least one no-show...and then the the school has to scramble to find a replacement. |
