I'm in my second year teaching in China and I've been with the same school the whole time. I want to change things up for next school year - either Thailand or, if I'm gonna stay in China, Qingdao or Xi'an.
I've been getting into hardcore job search mode the last few days, but then I got to wondering if it's quite necessary at this point. The reason I've been so concerned is that my school, which is part of a program through a US university, wanted us to decide to re-sign or not in February last year, so it just got into my head that February is go-time.
But now I'm thinking - are they so early only because of the nature of the program and the whole training/locating process? Is it generally more realistic to find things for August/September a bit later on still?
If anyone has any thoughts on when the most promising/practical time to really get concerned is for either place, I'd appreciate it. |

It really depends on the country and programs that you are looking at.
Korea school year starts in March
Japan school year starts in April
Thailand school year starts in May
Philippine School year starts in June
Many international schools run Sept-June
and in most cases the majority of the recruiting takes place about 3 months before the new school year starts. They also tend to recruit more at mid term for replacement teachers.
If you are looking at language academies then they tend to recruit year round with the slowest time in Dec-Feb.

Well it's almost definitely Thailand or China again for me. I know Thai school year traditionally begins in May, but I've come across plenty that start in August, as well, which is where my aim is there.
China of course is September-ish. I just am not sure when I should be really focusing on job-hunting for either...I know that it's never too early, but I also don't want to worry myself over not finding something now and have it turn out that peak looking season is still a month or two away. |
