Does anyone know of any schools in Veracruz (the city) that would be good to contact for teaching jobs? I have my ESL cert and a degree in World Language education. I lived in Puebla for two years and am ready to venture back to Mexico, but this time I want to live in Veracruz. I have no idea where to start. Any advice? Help please! |

Hi aog5003, Welcome to Veracruz!
If you're asking if anyone knows of any positions open, I don't. What I can say is that you will find very few (if any) adverts for teaching jobs here (the state). Why, I'm not sure. Any openings I've been made aware of (private bilingual schools and universities) have been through word of mouth, and are filled quickly through referrals or 'ship jumping' (teachers leaving one place mid-contract to fill an opening elsewhere if it suits them).
This is a place where its best to be on the ground, documents in hand, and ready to teach.
Language schools and training centers IH Veracruz, Berlitz, Interlingua are here. The people at IH are fairly friendly theyve been running around town for the past year and a bit signing up teachers for courses given the recent move towards qualifying national teachers in SEP regulated schools. They may have wind of who might be hiring. On that note, there are some very talented and qualified national teachers here. There are also a number of under qualified nationals teaching. But for whatever reason (I have a few theories), schools here tend to hire them over (qualified) international teachers.
There is a small market for business English teachers, but those I know personally are struggling to keep their time slots full. Times are tough in the port and many of the international companies that once ran full time in-house programs have suspended them indefinitely.
And independent teachers well, from time to time a see a few shingles out, but I dont know of any personally.
Backpackers haven seems to be The American School. Sad, because Ive heard they have great facilities and resources. On the plus side, their students make for good pickin's for private English tutors.
So, as far as where to start before you google your life away, decide what age group / level(s) youd like to teach, the number of hours youd be comfortable with, what remuneration youd be happy with, and all the other things you probably learned working in Mexico.
Best regards and good luck,
DL
BTW, you are familiar with the climate here? Life on the beach can be a beech when the sun shines |

You might want to check out the Merchant Marine Naval Academy = Escuela Nautica Mercante de Veracruz, which is a university level school that trains people to be naval pilots and machinists.
I believe they teach English to all their students.
Just go there in person and talk to the English coordinator (and they should speak English if you have trouble with Spanish), and drop off your resume.
The school year starts in August, but you could drop off your resume and see what happens.

Also, I think I saw quite a few universities there when they hosted the Mextesol national convention there a few years ago, so just travelling around and asking about universities, you should be able to make a few contacts.
Good luck! |
