I am currently living in S. Korea where I have worked at universities for over ten years. I lost my VISA due to a divorce (long story. Please don't ask) I am doing only privates, which was legal while I was married, but now that I am divorced, I have to find a job.
I don't want to stay in Korea any more. I hate this place and want out. Some people here in Korea have suggested that I look to China for a new life.
My question is, what do I need to work in China? I have a Master's degree in TESOL from the University of Tennessee, and a BA in English Lit. Do I need an Apostatized Degree or a criminal background check?
I am 56, which may be a factor, but I have read several posts that say age is not a big deal as long as you "look young". I don't smoke, I seldom drink and I exercise regularly.
I would prefer a university position. Is it possible? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks |

What do you need to work in China?
Depending on the location, the bare minimal is: You can speak English and you look different from the usual Chinese.
With a Masters in TESOL and a BA in English Lit, you could potentially pull off some plum choice jobs starting for around 12,000 RMB / month at an International school or high-grade University.
I personally know people who have a simple college diploma or some sort of certificate added with a TESOL and they make well over 10k a month (hard work though teaching primary kids and middle school kids).
I'd check out different websites, and ask a few recruiters to hunt jobs for you, but do not pick "any old job" and be weary of salaries, which ARE negotiable!
As for criminal record checks, transcripts (which are a headache), don't need them at all.
I'd look to Shanghai/Beijing/Shenzhen if you are looking for Korea or near-Korea modern facilities.
If your Korean is good enough, try the Northeast (Shenyang, Dalian, Dandong, Harbin, Qiqihar, Daqing) where you'll find lots of "Chinese-Koreans" and North Koreans you can befriend.
I understand you wanting to get out of Korea, did several years there and after a while you get truly sick of it.
Best of luck to you, mate. |

You could of course get a uni job in China, but you could also get a uni job in the Middle East or South America too. Maybe you should consider where you would like to teach a bit more. |

There's a school in Beijing looking for Literature teachers. Pays 10k a month. I'd do a Google on it. |

It's not that simple. It took me a year to get a divorce. Then Korea immigration decided to try and kick me out of the country since I was on a married VISA and not married anymore.
So I have taken my case to court and am trying to get PR VISA. It is important for my retirement that I have that VISA as much of my retirement income will come from an insurance policy that I have been paying on for almost 4 years.
If I lose my Korean VISA I lose that income. If I get the VISA, I can work in another country and still keep the insurance policy and get the income when I reach retirement age.
My case will be decided by a judge in the Korean court sometime next month. So, I will decide then what to do. |

With what you bring to the table, I really think you can do better than China. |
