|
|
I need a break after two years of near continuous teaching (1 month off during swine flu bull).
So I plan to head south from SLP and find a beach where i can learn to surf and maybe teach as a volunteer for accomodation etc
I did the same in Thailand a couple of years back.
Does anyone have any ideas/advice/recommendations
cheers in advance |

I don't have any links or names handy, but when I think beach and volunteering, turtles come to mind. I know there are groups working on the Oaxaca and Guerrero coasts that use volunteers to keep watch over nesting turtles and transport eggs to hatcheries. I met a couple - A Texan and a Brazilian - doing such volunteering in Troncones, Guerrero outside of Zihua. |

yeah..though of that
trouble is these organisations want over 1000 pounds or more in dollars when you are helping out for two weeks
did it before and did,nt mind but its a different matter when you,ve been earning peso,s for last wee while

yes, after I posted I went looking and saw some pay-to-volunteer places. Not the thought I had at all when mentioning it. The couple I had met were deeply involved in their operation and it was pure volunteer though....they'd been there for months.
On trading English lessons for accommodations/food, I've always wondered if anyone had pulled it off somewhere on the beach in Mexico. Haven't met anyone that's done it. I did meet a Canadian in Acapulco that was trading massages for his keep (among some other services to older single ladies). Creepy fellow. |

If it's just beach, I really liked the Guerrero and Michoacan coasts. Great beach camping, very few people save for a few spots (not including the obvious Acapulco and Zihua). Decent surfing in some places. |

Escondido comes to mind if talking about surfing. Spent a few days there a few years ago - beautiful spot during off season. Not sure I'd want to be anywhere near there during surfing season, but that's just me.
I think if you are creative you could live there for a few weeks fairly cheaply, without having to work. Look for places in town (top of the hill), away from the beach and the freaky people.

There are 11 other surfing beaches in the link posted, but I can't comment on them personally. |

Isla Mujeres...best beaches, safe, wonderful island. There is a small school called La Gloria where they'd probably be grateful to to have the services of an experienced volunteer. |
