I know the answer to that one!!

Ginger Meggs was a cartoon in newspapers in Australia quite some time ago, can't remember exactly when, maybe post WWII. Maybe he still is in some newspapers, I don't know. But he was a rotten little b a s t a r d, a cheeky mongrel, something akin to Dennis the Menace, but more intelligent. (As so many of us Australians are compared to our US counterparts... Wink )

As for Tiger Kelly, absolutely no idea.

Lozwich.

Dear gingermeggs - You Beaut,

Would this be the "Tiger Kelly" you referred to?

"Tiger Kelly.
Index entry (p. 24, 74) in Panel by Panel : A History of
Australian Comics, by John Ryan (Stanmore, NSW : Cassell
Australia, 1979). -- Index by John Melloy. -- Call no.:
PN6790.A8R9"

And, aha, he's your nemesis:

http://www.kaleden.com/articles/481.html

"Ginger Meggs - larrikin, battler and comic book hero - was created by cartoonist James Charles Bancks 78 years ago. He first appeared in 1921 as Ginger Smith in the Sydney Sun newspaper - one of the characters in the comic strip Us Fellers. Six months later he had become Ginger Meggs, and had acquired Mike the dog and a younger brother, Dudley. He also had a best mate called Benny, a girlfriend called Minnie Peters, and a rival for her affections, Eddie Coogan. In around a year of Ginger first appearing, the entire cast of the comic strip had been introduced, including his nemesis Tiger Kelly."

Love that Google!

Regards,
John

Well Googled, johnslat...1 bottle of Taishan finest beer is indeed winging its way to you....even as we speak. I remember reading these comics way back in the 40s...regularly ran in most newspapers.
Lozwich...I agree with the "intelligent" bit. but Ginge was never a little "bathplug"....now, how about "Bluey and Curly" ?

Ermmmm... no offence Ginge, but I wasn't actually around in the 40s... Embarassed

I just know the cartoon as a cultural thing in Oz, and because the media and stuff is my particular area of expertise. I'm sure that in the papers now he's not a terribly charming character - or at least that's what the adults in the strip think of him.

Who are Bluey and Curly? Or is that just showing my age again? Wink

Dear gingermeggs,

"1 bottle of Taishan finest beer is indeed winging its way to you....even as we speak."

Good thing I have friends who still partake, since I've been dry for almost 3 years now. And, after 40 years of guzzling with the best of them, the wonder is that I made it this far.
Regards,
John

Ok, looked at that, had a few laughs, but nope, never seen them before in my (short) life.

At least I'm still young enough to console my ignorance with a tasty after work beer! Wink
