I'm going to either China or Taiwan in a little over a year, and I was wondering if it would be better to get a cell phone here in the states and add an international plan, or just buy a phone and service in one of those countries. I won't use my phone for much. Not interested in anything fancy (internet, smartphone, etc.), just simple things like making calls and texting. Which would be the cheaper option? Any Ideas? |

Get it abroad.
Phones for as little as $20 and prepaid service for as little as $10 per month (basic service and text msgs).
A sim will cost you about $2. Americans have no idea how badly they get screwed on cell phone service in the states compared to the rest of the planet.

Abroad. Bring one and you might have to go through the hassle of trying to get it unlocked in a country where you don't speak the local language. It'll be a pain if you bring your own. Trust me, you'll end up throwing it back in the suitcase. Unless you have a state of the art one that will be easy to convert, forget it. It's more hassle than it's worth |

Definitely go local in China. I got a Nokia for 5 USD two years ago, it's still working fine. Calls cost about 1.5 cents per minute. Texting for 1.5 cents per message. I MIGHT spend 3 USD per month; one of my colleagues who can't stay off the damn thing (you know the type) spends about 20 USD per month. |
