I just received a 5 year multiple entry visa (60 days) from the Taiwan Embassy. I will be moving to Taipei next week and will be looking for a job. Should I switch over to a ARC or just stay on a visitor visa since it is valid for 5 years? What if I switched to an ARC and something happened with the job? Would I get switched back to my visitor visa?

I have never heard of a 5 year 60 day visa, but a 60 day visa is good for only 60 days once you are here. If you don't find work, you have to fly to Hong Kong and get a new 60 day Visa. If you want to work legally, you have to get an ARC. If your employer is slow, or you find a job too late in the 60 day period, you may still have to do a Visa run. There is no transferring of a visitors visa.

5 year visas are not common. With a 5 year multiple entry visa you can enter and leave Taiwan as many times as you like for 5 years, but you can't stay for more than 60 days at a time. You can keep doing this for 5 years with no need for a new visa, just leave and come back.

You can extend a 60 day visa to 120 days once you're in Taiwan (unless they stamped NON-EXTENDABLE across it), don't know if you can extend the 60 days on a 5yr multiple entry visa.

Once you get an ARC your visitor visa gets canceled and you can't get it back. If you don't have an ARC you'll be teaching illegally (may still be with an ARC). Personally, I'd want the ARC.

If something happens to your job after getting an ARC then you may have to do a visa run, but not always.

My visa expiration date is 2016. I think I got this because I made the people at the NY embassy laugh. Anyway, I think I will go for the ARC. Thank you for the information. Smile

Yes, you definitely should switch over to an ARC as soon as possible, even though it will mean voiding your multiple-entry visitor visa.

I have had immigration/labor bureau officers walk in on me THREE TIMES.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but three times seems like a pattern. A pattern that says "yes, immigration and the labor bureau do check up on teachers to make sure they have the correct paperwork."

Don't risk it. Get an ARC.

Furthermore, once you're on an ARC, if you spend five years in Taiwan on it, you'll be eligible for permanent residency (the APRC).

Even if you somehow manage to go years in Taiwan without a single legal incident on a visitor visa (exceedingly unlikely), you won't be eligible for the APRC after five years the way you would be had you been on an ARC instead.
